Saturday Tea-Time A Parents Worry

August 3, 2016

I recently wrote a post called, ‘When do you stop worrying about your child? NEVER!

It could be the time one of my four year old twin girls was rushed to hospital with dehydration, high temperature and suspected meningitis, or perhaps that none of my children are being bullied in high school, or that they are starting full-time school for the first time and you hope that they settle in ok.

Of course these are all situations that you can’t control, well at least to some extent. Then it changes in a flash. Your children are adults and the worry is exactly the same, but it’s difficult for you to help them avoid the dangers of life. The truth is they should experience these moments to help them develop into well rounded adults.

Well last Saturday tea-time at about 5.15pm this came home to me with a bang. We had been having a relativity quiet day. My son and other daughter had been around and because my second oldest daughter had been away at university the twins were loving having her around and playing all sorts of games and driving her mad. Ha ha!

They left at around 5pm and my phone was ringing so I said goodbye quickly and answered the phone to my eldest daughter, J. I instantly knew something was wrong. Through a trembling, sobbing voice she managed to say she had been in a car accident.
My initial reaction was is she injured or hurt? As a parent your protective mode kicks in and I knew I had to drive down straight away to help her sort it all out which is exactly what I did.
When I arrived I saw her standing by the side of the road with her boyfriend. The relief was instant. I knew she wasn’t hurt, badly at least. The car on the other hand was a mess and has been written off.

She doesn’t really remember the moment of impact and it’s most likely just as well. The other car had run a red light and caught the front passenger side of her car. This in turn spun the car and lifted it on two wheels sending it straight into the raised concrete central reservation. She doesn’t remember this, but her friend was following and had a birds eye view.
The lesson I have learnt is you truly never stop worrying about your children whatever their age and unfortunately the dangers become greater as they grow older. The reason being is because they are not with you much as they were when they were younger. So you can’t throw your cape of security around them and protect them from the perils of the world. Actually at 21 I’m sure she would not be that impressed Ha ha!
One interesting point I noticed about us as humans when things go wrong we so often turn to parents for help and assitance. I’m happy that I am here to help if needed.
The most important thing is that the only damage was to the car and not my daughter thank goodness, but you really never stop worrying about your children
The thought that did come to mind a little while later was you never know what’s going to happen in life and sometimes the unexpected can happen, but you have to deal with it. A parents worry never ends.

Silver lining is she has a courtesy car which happens to be a Citroen C3 which is brand new. I think she might get used to that!
