The many things you have to do when moving

February 16, 2016

When you are moving there so many things to do and it’s very difficult to remember everything so I thought I would do a moving home checklist which I consider one of the most important things to be done.

1. Book a removal company and get a price for the job. Ring a few days in advance to make sure there is no problem with the booking
2. Get all your mail re-directed. It’s fairly priced and can be done online and it makes sure you don’t miss any important mail
3. If you have the internet as most of us do, you can arrange for it to shut down in your old property and re-activated very quickly in your new property. Again this is something that can be done online
4. Sort out your council tax. It’s best to ring them and tell them the date you are leaving and what date you’re moving to your new property. They can easily calculate what you owe and move it over to your new property
5. Water is another important one. Phone to give your reading if you are on a meter and they also can move over any existing amount that you owe to your new property
6. Gas and electric supplies – it’s best to  phone with your latest meter readings and I highly recommend you settle the bills and get email confirmation as soon as possible
7. If you are renting the property where you are living it is best to leave the property in a clean tidy condition. This will enable you to get all your bond money back in full without delay
8. When packing all your belongings into boxes don’t rush! Remember to label each box with what is inside. This will make things much easier when you get to your new home. Don’t leave anything to the morning of the move. Be ready to go!
9. If you are moving with children try to involve them as much as possible, especially if they are little. This way they can feel part of the adventure!
10. Finally once you have moved remember to change your address on all your important bills, bank, DVLA etc. This will then reduce the amount of time you need to re-direct your mail which will save money.

This is just a few of the very important tasks you should remember to do when moving. I’m sure there are more! It’s a stressful time, but being organised takes a bit of stress out the situation.
I would love to hear if you have any other suggestions.

I label boxes with rooms and then the movers can put each box in the right place, great for unpacking.
