Valuable Life Skills To Teach From A Young Age For Any Gender

January 27, 2018

As a parent, you always want to set your children up for their best start in adult life. Over the years you will give out a constant stream of advice and aid to teach some invaluable life lessons – even though half the time your children believe they know better. Although their education will help in many ways, there are a few things that you can only learn through life experience and the teachings of your parents. For instance, your child won’t learn about changing a tyre, getting their heartbroken, or that failure can be positive in their classroom at school. When you think back to becoming an adult, and realise how many times you said “I wish I were taught this in school”, you will naturally want to decrease that amount for your children. Here are a few things you can start to involve your children in at an early age so that they’re not overwhelmed by all that life throws at them as they start to grow older.

Car Maintenance

Pretty much every young person wants to learn to drive when they come of legal age, and along with that comes the time that they own their first car. However, there are probably many drivers that still don’t know about checking their tyre pressure, oil, or water before a long journey, or how to change their tyre should they get a puncture. Involving your children in as many activities around car maintenance as possible, even paying them some pocket money to clean the car, will help these useful tips and tricks to become second nature by the time they come to own they own car. Of course, it is also important to teach when you may need a professional’s help. If your cambelt suddenly goes, your steering is off, or you need a paintless dent removal, it may be best to take your car to local garage rather than following a how-to YouTube video. Also, helping your children to understand the importance of alternatives to driving for short journeys, and the effect a car has on the environment, will not only help them to keep their carbon footprint low in later life but will also help to put some of their science lessons at school into context.

Laundry And Ironing

With older age comes more knowledge, and responsibility. You don’t want to be waving your children off to college or university, only to realise they have no knowledge of achieving clean and ironed clothes. This may sound extreme, but if you never teach them, they may never pick the skills up. Adding slowly to their weekly chore list with activities such as: separate your laundry into darks and whites, or ironing their school shirts or PE Kit for the next week of school, will help laundry become a natural part of their routine.

Preparing Food And Hygiene

Though your children may not be old enough to get fully involved in cooking dinner or making the lunches, it is important to teach them about food hygiene from a young age. Asking them to help unpack the shopping, so they understand not to put cooked meats with raw meats, and asking them to wash any fruit or vegetables before use, will start to embed these principals so that they are second nature as they grow up. As they grow, they can have a section of dinner to prepare, or if competent enough – have a day where they prepare a simple dish for family dinner. Even though they will be learning food tech at school, it is good to reinforce the lesson at home, where they can be transferred to the long-term memory, rather than the short.

There you have it, a few life skills that your children can pick up on from a young age, to help the transition to adult life be a little less overwhelming
