[ad] When Shouldn’t You DIY? 3 Things to Know

February 6, 2020

Usually, when something breaks in your home or office, it can be fun to remedy the issue with DIY repair. “Do-It-Yourself” jobs are a great way to to save money and put some skills to use. But for some projects, it’s just a better idea to call in a professional.

It’s hard to know when you’re ready to take on certain projects, but some repairs require special skills and knowledge. If you’re not sure if a repair project is out of your limits, we’ve got three guidelines that should keep in mind.

Think about the following three factors and trust your gut and knowledge when it comes time to use your skills. If your project doesn’t have any of these concerns, and you feel ready to tackle what your project needs, you’re sure to head in the right direction. Just be safe along the way!

1-Don’t Mess with Structural Integrity

You shouldn’t DIY when it’s time to deal with something that affects the structural integrity of the building. Generally, this includes things like your roof, foundation, or any beams or walls that are load-bearing. Even major holes in your walls following water or physical damage should be addressed by a professional.

While there are some exceptions to this rule for small holes or dents in your wall, more often than not, you need a professional. In general, anytime you deal with the “bones” or roof of your house, bringing in these roofing experts from Tennessee or contractors is a great idea.

In the long run, it saves you time, but it can also actually save you money to work with professionals like these. Often, the costliest fixes come after a failed DIY.

So, if there’s a problem with your house’s structure and you want to protect your family’s safety, call the experts instead.

2-Don’t Play Around When You’re Dealing

With Electricity! The next time you don’t want to play around with a DIY job is when you’re dealing with electricity. Electrical work can be extremely dangerous, especially if you are not correctly grounded.

A professional electrician or electrical engineer will have the training to understand how to protect themselves. That’s why it’s crucial to work with those who know about electricity and safety precautions.

If you are working with electricity and you are not aware of what you are getting into, the results could be deadly. So, for that reason, it’s best to leave the electrical work to the pros.

3-Don’t Mess with Warranty!

Lastly, don’t mess with an item if you have a warranty for it. Often, if you do a DIY repair on anything you have a warranty for, you will have invalidated the terms of your warranty.

Though DIY can be tempting, the savings you get from one fix aren’t worth sacrificing your warranty. It’s easier just to have it repaired -that’s why you have warranty coverage!

If you’re not sure if something has a warranty, or if a repair will affectit, call up the original manufacturer of your device. They are obligated to be clear about the terms of your warranty by law. That way, you can weigh your options and know if it’s worth it to DIY or not.

Bottom Line

All in all, be smart about your DIYs.Know that it’s good to do what you can with DIY, but don’t be afraid to ask for help or use a professional when it’s needed. There is a lot you can do on your own, and there’s a lot we can learn from those who specialize. Strike the balance in your workload and be safe. In the end, you’ll be happier: you’ll feel good knowing that your house is in safe hand
