Why Do We Shame Parents All the Time?

May 31, 2018

Parent shaming seems to be the one on everybody’s lips at the moment. It’s strange that all of a sudden it is a hot topic, but truth be told parent shaming has been going on for years. However now we have social media which has a wonderful habit of making parents feel like they are the worst parents in the world. Which of course the vast majority of us are not.

Why do other parents do it? Maybe they want a reaction, but for the life of me I don’t understand what satisfaction you would get out of making another parent feel bad about the way they are raising they children.

As a parent it’s our choice to decide exactly how we want to raise our children, what we give them, if we spoil them or discipline them for that matter in a way we see fit. They are our children so it’s up to us.

Most regular readers of my blog know I have five children. I have always done my best to give them everything they wanted, and if I’m honest there were times that I couldn’t afford it, but I made cuts in spending in other ways to be able to afford it. This usually meant me going without, but surely that’s what being a parent is. You put your children first, at all times.

My wife and I run relatively successful blogs, which means that my children reap the benefits of our hard work, but so often people think that we are spoiling them and I guess we are, but I see a problem of them benefitting from our hard work. If that means having new toys on a regular basis, then why not? We certainly couldn’t afford to buy a lot of them, which is why through our blogs we work very hard for some extra treats for our children. Being shamed for this actually hurts me, because we are working for it.

On the tv the other day there was a discussion about shaming parents, because they paid for somebody to teach their children how to ride a bike or potty training. Where is the problem if that is what parents want to do? Leave them alone! It’s their choice and their money to spend it on what they like. One thing I find amazing is people think nothing of having somebody else teach their children to swim, so what’s the difference between paying someone to teach your child to ride a bike or teaching them to swim? For me there is no difference.

Shaming other parents is one of the most negative things you can do. You are not living in their lives and maybe before you criticise them, think that there are maybe reasons and situations in their lives as to why they are parenting in such a way, or quite simply they can afford to do. Either way it’s their choice, and nobody should be judged or shamed because they have every right to do as they please. It’s their children. Just maybe these people who judge and shame other parents should take a hard long look at themselves. Why cant we just give out positives vibes to other parents, the world would be a much happier place.

What do you think of parent shaming? I would love to hear what you think.

Interesting post. I hadn’t seen some of that before. I think you are right, shaming people is a damaging practice that seems to have become more popular. I like critical discussion, I don’t like shaming. #ThatFridayLinky

I blame social media. People are judging one another’s parenting skills on the basis of a picture posted on social media.

It feels like a something that has come about more recently. Or perhaps it has always been around but never became a thing because people didn’t have a channel to express their views. Either way, you just have to do what you need to do to get on, never mind what anyone else thinks. #ThatFridayLinky

I’m totally with you. It seems almost fashionable to sit back and judge just about everyone for just about everything. How easy it is when you don’t actually face that person x

I think the increase of tall poppy syndrome & keeping up with the jones’ has created more judgemental negative nellys in the world. #ThatFridayLinky

I generally put it down to lack of confidence Nigel. “I don’t feel very confident, therefore I’m going slag you off because it’ll make me feel better.” I heard a grandmother say a while ago she finds a huge lack of confidence among today’s parents. I can’t say whether it’s any worse than in previous generations, but I frequently see a lack of confidence among other mums and dads.

That said, and I am sooooo going to get myself in trouble here, there is a line to be drawn! Pay someone to potty train your children? Unless you have a very good reason for doing so, that takes things a bit far. I wouldn’t ‘shame’ anyone for doing it, but as a mum or dad you sign up to take the rough with the smooth and that includes teaching your kids how to go to the toilet themselves.

I think some of this is to do with the negative side of social media: it’s so easy for begrudgers and unhappy people to take things out on sitting targets. Thing is their horrible thoughts and toxic observations are somehow given oxygen by the fact they are so visible, and obviously there are like minded sad people to pick up on their rants and make them viral. It probably always has been like this, just more obvious now: the good ones don’t go out of their way to spread unhappiness like the trolls do. Don’t feed the trolls! #ThatFridayLinky

I hate it when parents shame other parents. As long as the kids are happy and healthy that’s all that matters #ThatFridayLinky

I think I might have been living in a bit of a bubble recently, as I haven’t seen much about parent shaming. However I’ve certainly seen it throughout my journey with parenting. It really is such a shame, because we all parent for the same reason; we love our children and want the best for them.

I also think it follows on to the children. The parents that are shaming others are bullying and often have children that then become bullies.

I’ve been ‘looked down’ upon by other parents before and it sucks. Because we both want the best for our children and both love them dearly. It’s a shame parents can’t connect on those similarities rather than see the differences and shine negative light.

    Great post.

This is a really interesting read, we live in a crazy whole of comparison. Each parent and child is unique so no one else 100% knows the journey so shouldn’t judge. #ThatFridayLinky

If the child is happy and the event is safe then leave it alone. If the child is in danger then it is time to intervene. Otherwise lets all just get along! #thatfridaylinky

Parenting is hard enough without others looking down on us and shaming for every little thing we do.

I hate parent shaming. At the end of the day – your kids, your choice. I do think social media plays a big part in this but I think if you can afford to treat your kids then why shouldn’t you. If you want to give your kids lessons on bike riding then that’s fine too. Like you say, people don’t blink at the thought of swimming lessons why are bike lessons any different? Great post!

Really interesting post! I only really caught the end of the whole debate but it’s so baffling the way everyone thinks they have an opinion on what someone else is doing with their own children. Its madness! #Thatfridaylinky

I hate parent shaming in the ways you mention and would definitely have paid for help with potty training if I had been able to. I remember a school member of staff making me feel so worthless because my son was struggling to move on from nappies. I had not even wanted him to go to the nursery until he was ready but they had put me under pressure as it meant they got extra funding! I was post-natally depressed so had no fight left in me. I am sickened how the media also pull out report after report telling us we are harming out children when I like to believe most of us really do try out best however chaotic that might be. I can do a good enough job of shaming myself – I don’t need the chorus of extras doing the same. Great post as ever #ThatFridayLinky

I think you’re right. I’ve probably been guilty of it myself at times. It’s so hard to figure out how to get it all right with my own kids, that when I see someone else doing something I don’t agree with, I’m critical (not usually to their faces but I’ll say something to my wife). Plus my wife and I catch each other being critical of one another – usually something she or I did in dealing with a situation with the kids. We need to remind ourselves we’re doing the best we can. Important topic and I’m glad you brought it up.

Hi, social media certainly does seem to have an impact on parent shaming. It’s a shame because it can also have a positive effect as well#thatfridaylinky

I think its easy than ever to get your opinion out there, but I think this has been going on forever. Maybe its born from insecurity. Everybody is so afraid that they aren’t doing a good job that by putting others down it makes them feel better #thatfridaylinky

See this is the problem with social media, people say things they would never dare to say to someone’s face. Being judgmental and shaming never helps anybody, if you really think there’s a genuine problem with the way other people parent, the loving thing would be to help them in some way. Keep up with the great blogging work btw! #thatfridaylinky

I would love someone to teach Zach how to use the potty and get my older 2 confident on their bikes! Parenting is tough so getting a bit of help shouldn’t be attacked #thatfridaylinky
