[ad] 5 Fantastic Ways To Set A Health Example For Your Kids

January 14, 2020

One thing you’ll learn very quickly as a Dad is how much your kids rely on for everything. In the beginning, it means food, bathing, and basic activities they are too young to do at that stage of their lives. But, as they get older, it becomes apparent that they turn to their parents for advice, too. Yep, you’re a role model, and it’s a scary thought. Raising them to be decent human beings is a tough enough job!

However, an area of their life that you should embrace is their health and wellbeing. Teaching them lessons that will maintain their mind and body for the years to come should ensure they understand the importance of healthy living. Plus, it’s something you control with your actions by leading by example. Children are sponges, and their brains will retain the information for decades.

With that in mind, take a look at the advice below. Underneath, you’ll find ways to safeguard your children’s health by being a leader. Right you are, boss!

Show Them That You Exercise

Childhood obesity is a massive problem and something that you don’t want your kids to endure. Not only will it impact their longevity and quality of life, but they’ll be bullied for being overweight, which isn’t fun. To stop them from falling into the 5% category of kids who are classed as obese, you need to show them that exercise is an integral part of life. When they see their Dad donning his favourite lycra outfit, sure, they might wretch a little! For the most part, the image will subconsciously log in their brains.

Working out a couple of times a week for more than half an hour isn’t a walk in the park. What with work and your responsibilities at home, there will be times when you can’t be bothered. However, these are the instances when you’ve got to push yourself to set a stellar example as they have the biggest impact. Proving that leading a busy, fulfilling life is possible should prevent them from making excuses.

After all, if their hero, their Dad, can do it, then so can your kids!

And Do It With A Smile

Heading out to the gym or going for a run three times per week isn’t enough. You’ve also got to set a fantastic positive mental attitude because exercising is as much mental as it is physical. Without the right motivation, it’s almost impossible to get off the sofa and get the blood pumping. A smile, however, the push you need to ensure your brain is in the right mindset for a job.

Children are the same. They require motivation more than adults as they are excellent at finding loopholes. If they don’t want to do it, they won’t feel guilty about ditching their duties! A humble grin shows your kids that you love the rough and tumble of working out, and it’s a feature that should permeate their exercise routine, too. Allowing them to choose sports that they love rather than what society says they should do is key to regulating health.

Whether it’s now or in the future, the passion for doing activities they enjoy won’t fade and will push them to exercise more. And, that’s without getting into the mental health side of things either.

Don’t Forget Oral Hygiene

When you hear the term ‘health,’ it’s easy to focus on the main culprits. Maintaining a healthy weight and burning calories are two areas that are synonymous with the world. Of course, it’s an all-encompassing term that includes everything from mental health to oral hygiene. And, the latter is essential than the majority of parents realise, for the most part.

For one thing, there is an aesthetic value. You don’t want them looking like a haggard sailor with missing teeth at the age of ten! Secondly, the mouth impacts the body as a whole. One infection in an abscess can escalate to the point where it affects vital organs such as the kidneys and liver (it’s due to the body’s inflammatory response). Cleaning your teeth twice a day with an electric brush, and using floss and mouthwash is a great way to get them into a routine. If your teeth are past the point of no return, check out an advantage of dental bridges and don’t find the fact from your children. Being open and honest will show them what they will have to do if they don’t take care of their peggies.

Implants are alternatives, yet they don’t cover small gaps or little chunks of teeth.

Cook With Flair

Okay, forcing them to eat veggies when they are young won’t last forever. As with all things child-related, their taste buds change over time and might make them hate vegetables they used to love. Fear not, though, because making them eat specific foods is a short-sighted method. Instead, you should concentrate on showing them the fun involved in the preparation process.

Children that love to cook might not grow up to be chefs, but they won’t rely on microwave meals either. As a result, these kids are more likely to buy and make meals that are full of goodness. All it takes is a touch of flair to get their attention. Put on music and sing along while you’re cooking to show them that you’re having a whale of a time. If you’re lucky, they’ll want to join in, which is when you can pass on your secret recipes.

Just make sure they keep it in the family. You don’t want the whole neighbourhood to know what makes your tacos taste authentically Mexican!

Do Everything Together

If your children require a push, then you should be the one who initiates. For everything on this list, they are more likely to participate if they have a helping hand that they trust. Working out is the perfect example. Studies show that kids have a 35% higher chance of meeting exercise guidelines when their parents take them to places where they can be physical.

All you have to do is sit and watch them play on the playground from a nearby bench or kick the ball to them in the park. Everyone can do that, right?!
