[AD] Looking After Your Garden During Summer

Nowadays I live in the UK, but a number of years ago I lived in Australia and there is a dramatic difference between keeping your garden tidy and looking its best in UK than there was in Australia.

So I am going to highlight a few differences between the two and how it can vary when you live in different parts of the world.

1. Lawns

There is such an incredible difference between the UK and Australia. Here in the UK unless we have a heatwave that lasts for months the chances of the grass needing a water are actually quite slim. I know I have actually gone all summer without watering the garden.

When I was living in Australia however, it was a very different story. During the summer, firstly, because you would go months without any rain and very high temperatures, this meant that the lawns, which were of a sturdy type of grass, would need watering on a much more regular basis or come the end of summer there would be no grass left.

2. Swimming Pools

Here in the UK it is actually very rare to see swimming pools in people’s back gardens. The reason being is of course that we don’t get enough consistent sunshine to use a swimming pool on a regular basis so it’s a lot of investment of money for something that has little use.

When I was living out in Australia, and if you have ever been there, you will know that it’s very rare not to have a swimming pool in the back garden. I’m not saying everybody has a swimming pool, but it wouldn’t surprise if every other home had a swimming pool.

During the summer the swimming pool is a focal point of home entertaining along with a traditional Aussie barbecue and it will get a lot of use. Of course that also means that you need to keep your pool clean in summer.

It will need to have the right levels of chemicals such chlorine etc to make sure no bacteria that could be harmful is in the water. You also need to remove any leaves on a regular basis, and of course keep the tiles all clean so that everybody can enjoy healthy swimming during summer.

3. Fencing

Here in the UK we tend have wooden fences and they are usually perfectly ok as long as they are treated with a preservative every year. In Australia wooden fences are severely damaged by the hot sun and generally won’t last as long even if they are treated. Consequently in Australia you tend to see a lot of metal or tin fences for the obvious reason that will be able to withstand the strong and intense sunshine and give many years of good service.

It is amazing how where you live in the world, how differently you have to approach looking after your garden during the summer months and I have experienced how you look after your garden in two countries.
