All This Spare Time: What Will We Do? Get Very Romantic.

September 12, 2016

Last week, as I have already written, my four year old twins started school full-time. My only job of the week was decorating a hall/landing and stairs in a semi detached house which went a lot quicker than I had anticipated, enabling me to finish by mid morning on Friday.

What could we get up to in an empty house? Get romantic, wink wink! Sounds like a plan! No chance of being disturbed by the sound of tiny feet wandering in!
Oh Yes ! Undisturbed SEX! Yayyyy…

I arrived home around 11am and my wife was sitting at the dining table furiously typing away on her Apple Mac Pro. In the background I heard the sound of undercover boss coming from the tv.
Wait now, OMG! Where is Bing, Justin Fletcher, or You Tube kids? This doesn’t feel right! For what feels like the first time in four and half years childrens TV was not on the TV during daylight hours!
The sound of our four year old twins not playing or arguing over toys or consistently saying I’m hungry, I’m-thirsty, I want this or that, I’m bored! It was all missing! You would think awesome! Peace and quiet, but no it was weird and strange, and I actually felt a little bit lost and unemployed! Aww I know big hugs for me!
So I proceeded to make some lunch, sit down, watch some tv and have cup of tea in peace. If I’m honest after about an hour I didn’t really know what to do with myself. I was beginning to count down the minutes to when we would be picking up the girls. I’m not sure if that is sad or not? The reality is trying to accept that the girls are growing up. Which they most certainly are.
Finally 3 o’clock came and we went up to the school to pick them up and if I’m honest I had missed them so much, but surely that’s completly normal when they have been with you 24/7 for the last four and half years.

I was looking through the classroom window from a distance and I could see they were milk moniters and it was pretty cute watching them hand out the milk to all the other children brought a lump to my throat. I realised they don’t need us in the same way and never will from this week forward.
I have no doubt that I will get used to all this free time and maybe possibly enjoy it. I have already worked out that my working week will change, but Monday’s I am not working as a painter/decorator, which will allow me to work on my blog a bit more which will be great because at the moment I have to do most of it in the evenings.

The transition from a being on hand to do whatever the girls need to having free time is going to be a very slow transition and accepting that I will have me Time! I know a lot of people can’t wait for this moment, well I wasn’t! I was actually dreading it, but it’s here. Not hearing the incessant chattering and waffling about rubbish and just generally not taking a breath, it’s actually what makes your house a home.
My little twin girls are not so little anymore and it’s a very bittersweet moment that  their reliance on Mummy and Daddy has changed forever. Their needs from us will never be the same again.
So today we both not working,do we have plans absolutely. Wetherspoons for lunch. When your children are in school and you are both home together. What do get up to? Would love to know.

We're a long way off from this peace and quiet again at the moment. See it must be tough! Think it's completely expected to miss them and not really know what to do with yourself.

Such a great post, I really do love reading your updates. My son goes to pre-school 3 mornings a week so I work from home during this time, I'm lucky to have the flexibility with my job. Although Monday mornings are spent up wetherspoons with my best friend whose son goes to the same pre-school as my toddler. I love those mornings #marvmondays

Aww this is lovely, it really is bittersweet! We just watch bad TV when we're home alone, or eat junk food without having any little mouths to share it with!

We're rather partial to a cheeky lunch out while our eldest is at school but most days the time goes so bloody quick and 3pm soon rolls round! #bestandworst

I think you have summed up exactly how I'll feel when my children are at school! It's another 2 years away, but I'm sure that time will be around in the blink of an eye. It's so easy to focus on how hard being a parent is, and how you want time to yourself. But when you have that time ,and the reality that you have it because your children are growing up, and don't need you anymore, must be a really difficult one to comprehend. My boys have just started nursery 2 days a week, and I've been desperate for that time to myself, as I hadn't had a day entirely to myself since they were born. I do love the time on my own, and I'm really enjoying it, but by 3, I can't wait to go and get them! And I still have 5 other days where they are very dependant on me! But I know it'll be very bittersweet when they are both at school.

Its not often that we are both home during the day, but we like to go grab a nice, uninterrupted lunch somewhere. And maybe a bit of nookie too #bestandworst

Aww I can only imagine what’s its like when your little ones start school (my daughter is only 17 months). Try to enjoy the free time, though I know that’s easier said than done! #binkylinky

Hahaha… so funny. Unfortunately, we rarely have moments like this because when the kids are in school, me and husband are also at work. But yes, it would be nice to catch up on things when it’s peaceful and quiet. #binkylinky

Haha I love your ideas of uninterrupted sex! My husband is the same whenever the kids aren’t here!! I dread to think what I will do all day when my youngest starts school, my husband suggested I can spend the days cleaning, and then he wonders why I’m not giving in to his sexual advances!! #binkylinky

If my partner and I ever had any time away from our 2 year old we would most probably take the biggest nap ever!! Incidently she can’t wait to start school, she asks every day, it will come around before we know it i’m sure. Hope your girls have settled in well and you’re adjusting to your new found freedom! #binkylinky

Aah, free time! Since I moved back to the UK a couple of months ago I’ve not had any free time! Like you, I tend to use that rare nap time hour for blogging (or Netflix if there’s a new season of Once Upon A Time on!!! ) #justanotherlinky

So lovely to hear a dads thoughts and feelings on those first days at school. Its such a big milestone for the little ones, but us parents too. I hope they both had an amazing week and are feeling settled in their new school 🙂 Thanks for linking up to #MarvMondays. Emily

There’s always one child at least in our house, we have 2 boys who are 3 and 1 next month. I will be homeschooling so we won’t see any peace for a long while yet! When my eldest goes to my dads on a thursday afternoon it feels so weird to have just my youngest so i don’t know how i would even react to both of them gone lol #binkylinky

Haha typical isn’t it. Rewarded with more time we begin to pine for them. I’m sure it’ll take a period of adjustment but soon enough you’ll be enjoying your ‘wink wink’ time in peace.

I think you saw my list of 20 things to do without the kids ! Yeh , like you i have failed to ‘enjoy’ the time. I was in floods of tears most of Tuesday as Harry started at Breakfast club and he looked a bit upset going in so i got upset and cried all day.#binkylinky
