Creating a feature wall
I was recently employed to redecorate a small lounge,and create a feature wall.
The lounge was originally a back room in the house, that was used as a storage area, mainly for golf supplies, but the property was extended and this consequently reduced light dramatically to this room so I needed to create an impression of light and then produce a feature wall. To be honest this was going to take careful planning and the use of the right paint.
So first of all I recommended to my client that we use Dulux light and Space emulsion for the ceiling. I recommended the colour, ‘Absolute White’ and then I left them to decide upon what colour they wanted on the three walls. They had already purchased the wallpaper they wanted for their feature wall.
I never recommend colours for walls because I don’t live there. It has to be the clients choice as they have to live with it everyday! They chose the colour, ‘Moon Shimmer’ in the Dulux light and space finish.
The first thing to do was to strip all of the old wallpaper from what will be our feature wall. Once I had stripped the wall I discovered that is wasn’t in very good condition. As a result I decided to line the walls and for this I used Wall Doctor lining paper. This lining paper is particularly good as it almost completely gives a good smooth finish on poor walls.
Wall doctor lining paper is made by Graham and Brown. It is very easy to hang as you simply paste the wall and hang your pre-cut lengths, then trim the top and bottom. The whole took me about one hour to complete.
The next part of the job was to paint the ceiling and coving in Dulux light and space (Absolute White). I then applied two coats of paint. The coving required three coats of paint.
Then I moved onto the walls and applied two coats of Dulux light and space (Moon Shimmer). I had to paint the walls in a further coat because the colour we were covering was darker. A third coat completely covered it.
Dulux light and space does without a doubt give added light in darker areas and this process has totally lightened the room.
I then prepared and painted all of the woodwork in undercoat and white satinwood.
Finally I hung the new wallpaper to create the feature wall.
The overall look is so much lighter with the feature wall adding a touch of class.
