I have always felt blessed to have been a part of creating five lives. My children really are my world, bit cliche I know, buts it’s true.
I have always been fascinated that from the moment of conception this human being growing in the safe place of a woman’s womb is protected from everthing in the outside world. I’m not really interested in biology or the religious aspects. I’m awe struck that a baby arrives in the world nine or so months later.
It has never ceased to amaze me that with the amount of babies being born, that the vast majority goes without a hitch.
The human body is quite incredible and also so complicated. To keep pro-recreating at the level it does and this leads me onto a subject that I have difficulty in understanding. What makes an adult abuse a child?
It is beyond my comprehension and understanding why somebody would abuse a child. Whenever I see a television report or newspaper article of another child being mistreated, abused or worse, my blood boils. What possesses these people to hurt small children? Of course I often read that these adults had issues such as terrible childhoods etc. Well, I don’t buy it. There is no excuse to hurt a defenceless child that can’t and won’t invariably fight back or say something to a responsible adult.
Then when these awful disgusting people are caught they are nowhere near dealt with by the law properly, well at least in my view they’re not. If they dealt with them in a manner that is unacceptable to society while being incarcerated, do I sympathise? Not one one bit. They need to feel what’s it’s like. What they have done to innocent children. I call that karma.
We do on a regular basis blame social workers for failing to protect children and there is no doubt they are sometimes at fault, but their workload is enormous and it must be one of the most difficult jobs ever, certainly one I wouldn’t want to do.
My five children, as I have already said are the centre of my life. I have watched the three oldest grow up into well balanced adults and even now I would protect from any harm, as I did when they were growing up. With my four year twin girls, my feeling is exactly the same. I will always protect them from harm and keep them safe.

I don’t condone smacking children. I have always believed it’s medicine for adults, to makes them feel better and give them a sense of control and power. For all of that I’m not cricisting parents that do smack. It’s their child, their choice. Although the next time you do smack your child remember that moment you held them in your arms as a new born, you would not even consider it, would you? No, because at that moment most of us decide to protect and nurture our children for their life. To never allow harm come to them. So when I hear of parents hurting their children to any degree I ask myself what changed?
I really don’t understand how you could hurt your own flesh and blood, but unfortunately it goes on.
With Christmas just around the corner, Im looking forward to all my family spending Christmas Day together, and I know we will have a very happy time, but my heart goes out to those children that this Christmas Day will just be another day, no different from the previous day, and most likely won’t receive presents or eat a massive Christmas dinner. Their abuse at the hands of an adult won’t stop just because it’s Christmas Day.

To create life with a loving partner is in my opinion the reason we are here and to then abuse and to put that innocent child through physical or mental torture is terrible and inexcusable.
Would love to know what you think.

Child abuse is something that I just cannot handle, it makes me so sad and angry. You have lovely children and I have to agree with you, although I have only created one life so far, it is truly awesome! #thatfridaylinky

Creating life is indeed an amazing experience. Mrs Adams and I were fortunate to have no issues and I do feel for those who have trouble or who go through miscarriage etc. As for the abuse issue, no, I don’t understand it. It is foreign to me. Thanks fot hosting #thatfridaylinky

I worked in daycare for years and sadly I’ve had to report multiple instances of abuse by parents. Stress, problems in the home, finances…it can all lead to abuse. It is sad and I’ve seen even great parents strike out in a moment of stress. Unfortunately, there are those who should have never had children and they are the ones who end up on the front pages of the newspaper. #ThatFridayLinky

It is beyond sickening to know what some children have to go through. I strongly agree that there should much stronger penalties for perpetrators. I sometimes miss the safe haven of my son growing inside me. The protective bubble! So much harder to protect on the outside world. I don’t have a loving partner, I don’t have much money but what I do have is an endless amount of unconditional love for my son. I try to incorporate a ‘Gentle’ approach to my parenting, respecting my son as a human being above anything else. I get so many things wrong but hold my hands up to mistakes and learn from them. I love your blog Nige. Your children are incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful, supportive father xx

Great post at a time when most are writing about the Hollywood-side of Christmas. Child abuse is a difficult subject, but well handled here. Nice one, Nige.

You’ve written this exceptionally well Nige. I’m with you on the subject of smacking, it’s something I don’t agree with. Ever. Child abuse makes me incredibly angry and incredibly sad in equal measures. I remember the Baby P case a few years ago, this was before I was a Mum. It made me cry. Children need to be protected. #thatfridaylinky

It really is amazing what the hun man body can do. And working in social services I can agree with you that the workload of the social workers is indeed very big

Such a great post I must say. My 3 kids are also my life and everything my wife and I do revolves around them. I too can’t believe how kids can be abused or misstreated by their parents but we see it far to often. I think its about time the governments sit down and allow the laws to catch up to current times. Here in Canada ours are stuck in the 1950’s or so it seems where you can sell pot and get 10 years but child abuse gets you no time and its a long process to even help the child out of the house in extreem cases. Not very right in my eyes.

working in a hospital, I’ve seen more of this sort of thing that I would like. I think in many cases there is substance abuse and anger problems. The abuser basically just get messed up and loses his/her shit. Its a terrible problem regardless of the reasons, and as you say, inexcusable

You are right. Not to say my girls have not had a swat on the butt for serious offenses- never feels right though. I am more of an empty threat kind of mom at this point.

I agree with you too an extent, think people need to find there own ways to deal with bad behaviour. (Agreed this should never result in child abuse)

Well I definitely wasn’t expecting this post to go in that direction! Well said though… I don’t understand it either. It sickens me, the thought of the things some people do to children… and yes… unfortunately it does continue. Awareness is key and helping others when they seem in need or you see signs. #thatfridaylinky

Those who abuse children have serious psychological problems. I don’t even want to think about it #ThatFridayLinky

I can’t even comprehend a parent who abuses their child, I just don’t want to think about what goes on inside a persons head who inflicts pain on their own flesh and blood, it goes against everything that we feel as parents. I guess not everyone feels that way, it’s unbearable to even consider. #thatfridaylinky

I agree with you totally. We see it so often, these couples on the news that have put their children, often tiny babies, through such abuse, and it makes me so very angry. How can ‘parents’ that bought these beautiful innocent humans into the world do such a thing? 🙁 #thatfridaylinky

I totally agree. I also agree that smacking is not the answer, I once watched a child hit their mother, then the mother smacked the child and said “hitting is wrong”… when she had just hit her child back, how is a child supposed to process that? I firmly believe using words to explain is far better and more effective along with positive praise for behaving. My brothers and I were never smacked and we always still knew how to behave well and for the most part did! Kids are kids and sometimes adults expect them to behave in a certain “perfect” way when after all they are children, they are going to misbehave sometimes. #ThatFridayLinky

This is such a well written post on a touchy subject. I can’t get over how anyone would intentionally hurt their child. Cases like baby P and Victoria really get me raging. If you can’t and won’t give them the love and care they need then either don’t have a child in the first place or give the child to a family who will. #thatfridaylinky

This is a great post. Looking at cases like Daniel Pelka, Victoria Climbie, Baby P, Vanessa George etc are just disgraceful. I don’t understand how people hurt children, although I do have someone that I know that was abused as a child and I just can’t grasp how scumbags can do it! I could talk all day about safeguarding! #thatfridaylinky

Being married to a child protection social worker I can certainly agree their workloads are enormous. Virtually always well over their dedicated case load. However like any profession the rare stories of failure always make the headlines. We never here of the 1000s of kids safely removed from harm. Unfortunately it’s one big horrendous cycle. Kids are groomed from a young age. Therefore if violence becomes a normal part of their life they’re highly likely to repeat that behaviour as an adult. It’s a terribly sad world we live in sometime.
