Don’t start in the furniture store.

You’ve just moved into a new house and want to go straight to the furniture shop? No plan, no budget, you want to furnish your unfurnished home. I understand but please, take one step at a time. This article on the New York Times puts it perfectly, “Many have heard the advice to avoid grocery shopping when you’re hungry, because it leads to poor choices. The same holds true for furniture stores – don’t go shopping in a panic, just because you have an empty home.”

Stray from trends.

Forget about what’s trending and focus on decorating your way. As My Domaine mentions, “Trends can be incredibly tempting. But talk to any designer, and you’ll hear the same advice: Focus on what you love—not what everyone else loves.” Remember that trends come and go, so don’t chase trends around. Decorate with items you love and turn your house into a home in no time.

Never sacrifice comfort.

When picking out new furniture, never sacrifice comfort. Of course, you’ll want to have furniture that is as beautiful as it is comfortable but don’t sacrifice comfort for the most modern and elegant chair in the shop. “Sure, your eyes may want the most modern, chic couch in the showroom. But your back may not.” Comments Elle Decor.

Establish a colour scheme.

Gary McBournie, interior designer, shared with House Beautiful that it’s essential to think of a colour scheme when fully renovating your home. “For a head-to-toe makeover, the first step is creating a palette.” Gary suggests coming up with a basic colour scheme for the whole house and then taking this colour scheme from room to room.
