Generation Z 16-22 Year Olds My View
Generation Z.
What exactly is that?
Well Radio One produced a survey/report all about Generation Z, who are people aged 16-22 years old.
One overwhelming result was the older generation overwhelmingly said they consider 16-22 year olds as lazy, selfish, and obsessed by social media.
How wrong could they be?
In my opinion, and I think I have the right to express my opinion as I’m a father five children of which three of them are in that age bracket.
First of all I will say that there have not been moments when my older three children have been very lazy and incredibly selfish, but I’m fairly confident that when I was that age I was definitely lazy and yes selfish too. Isn’t that part of growing up? I think it is. I will come to the fact that they are supposedly obsessed by social media later in this post.
When I was growing up I didn’t always clean my room or help out with chores around the house. I can still here my mother shouting “Nigel, bring down your clothes that need washing”, and on occasions I never did. I was more interested in getting ready to go out to meet my friends, which I guess is considered selfish and not putting my family first.
Well all this got me thinking, that nothing has really changed. Young people today are doing exactly what I was doing all those years ago. It really hasn’t changed. So it really shocks me that the elder generation consider Generation Z as lazy and selfish. It all sounds a bit hypocritical to me. We were no different. It’s called being young and free without too many responsibilities, enjoying life. I wonder if the elder generation remember that. I do and they were great times.
My three older children all try not to be selfish, I know that, but when you are that age you just want to experience life to the full and cram as much as you can in.
My three older children have all had part-time jobs whilst they’ve been going through the education system. My oldest is now in full-time employment and works incredibly hard, and consequently earns very good money. My 20 year old daughter is in university carving out a career and she has a part-time job to help fund her life. Plus my 18 year old son has just gone to university and I don’t doubt for one minute he will find a part-time job to help fund his life when he settles in. So that’s lazy out of the way.
Recently my mum had a fall and was in hospital. My eldest daughter has visited on a very regular basis, and my 20 year old daughter phoned on a regular basis, but she couldn’t visit because she is in University 200 miles away. My son before he went to university came to visit his grandmother regularly with me. Now correct me if I’m wrong, but I wouldn’t call that selfish behaviour. It’s actually putting family first.
Is generation Z obsessed by social media? Well I think obsessed is a bit strong, but what it is, is that 16-22 year olds really don’t know life without the internet, just the same as I wouldn’t know life without television. So does that make me a telly addict? Not one bit! Social media etc is totally part of their lives and will forever be in their lives, but that doesn’t make them obsessed. The truth is I think I am more obsessed with social media. In fact I know I am, I’m constantly on Twitter and FaceBook.
My thoughts are we have a generation of 16-22 year olds that are dynamic, ambitious, educated and aware of the problems that need fixing in the world that previous generations have messed up.
I personally think the world is in safe hands, and that the future is bright. Generation Z is more tolerant of people and less likely to be stereotyping individuals. They won’t question people’s sexuality and women will hopefully eventually get equality. They more likely to accept other peoples choices in life. I think they are generation to be proud of.
My final message to the elder generation is simple. The world has changed, and Generation Z is it’s future.
So that’s my view on Generation Z. Would love to know your thoughts.

I think every generation in the history of mankind has thought the generation after them is “no good” and “has it too easy.” Every generation. You’re totally spot on Nige, this is the next generation and I think they are actually kinder and more tolerant of others because of the exposure they get from social media. We just happen to have a society that likes to focus on negative views on the news instead of all the good happening out there. #ThatFridayLinky

In all honesty whilst some may think each generation has it easier I think each generation just learns that little bit more. Working out how to adapt to all the changes and issues we now face is a tough job! #thatfridaylinky

There’s definitely some huge differences in today’s generation, as you say less stereotyping- today’s generation accepts race, sexuality and gender at face value. There’s far less stigma around things. Technology obviously massively changes how we were at that age. Your girls are gorgeous and it sounds like you have raised 3 amazing kids (plus the twins of course). You should be very proud! #thatfridaylinky x

Personally, I feel today’s generation is overwhelmingly more accepting of people and open to change. Also, with the world the way it as at the moment, this generation is actively involved in politics and finding out what is best for them and their lives as well as their families and potential children. If social media had existed back then, it would be no different. Like you say, being lazy and selfish is part of growing up. You aren’t born ready to serve everyone else, you need to find yourself and learn from your actions. I was lazy and selfish, then I moved out when I was 18 and I remember phoning up my dad and crying at him telling him how much I appreciated everything he had done for me at home and how I wish I had done more to help. #thatfridaylinky

Every generation despairs of the next one lol.
Congratulations on turning your kids into hard-working, well-rounded people.
I might disagree with you on the social media front though. Everyone, not just young people, spends waaaay too much time on the damned mobile phones! Yes, even me.

I worked at a University for several years and totally agree with you that Generation Zers have some brilliant qualities. I get really cross when people dismiss them as lazy and selfish as I think this generation have it particularly hard as far as education and jobs go. If anything, they have to work even harder to succeed than the generations before them. It sounds like your kids are turning out just fine though 🙂 #thatfridaylinky

I don’t think they are any different to what we were at that age and as far as social media is concerned? I think we’re all a little hooked on it, no matter what our age! #thatfridaylinky

Like you have said, we all go through that ‘selfish lazy’ stage, it is a part of growing up. No doubt when we are older we will in turn comment on the younger generation. The fact is the younger generation learn from the older, adapt and make the world a bit better and it is a cycle but as we age we forget. We forget what we were like at that age. I do it now, I see kids running in the streets being loud and comment that they might wake my children but what was I doing at their age – the exact same.
The good thing is that our children are learning to be better, they are more accepting of the world around them and the diversity in people. #ThatFridayLinky

I am not far out of that age bracket myself being 25 but I feel the younger generation are more accepting and welcome to change than the older generations. I think the younger generations get a lot of stick nowadays and it’s not for any good reason. #thatfridaylinky

I think its impossible to catorgorize an entire age group. I will say that our 18 year old is lazy, selfish, and obsessed with social media but that doesn’t mean they all are! #thatfridaylinky

Broad strokes against any group, well it is just wrong. Generation Z! Goodness, what is next. Mine are 7 and 9 and who knows what they will call them. But, back to the point, I hope you are right. That the future is in good hands because of the kids? Please be true. This current lot is really making a mockery of everything. We need a fix, some tolerance and a whole lot of empathy! #ThatFridayLinky xoxo

I’m sure that they are not really any different expect they have easy access to social media now, which can often be positive as well as negative. It seems like your children are proving this#ThatFridayLinky

It seems to be the way that we put down the latest generation to hit adulthood. Looks to me like you have three shining examples of the positives of Gen Z right there! Well done mate, great kids, great post! #ThatFridayLinky

Completely agree. Like you say, it was the same when we were growing up. I think the changes in technology have alienated and scared so many of the older generation – but I imagine that’s a generalisation in the same way! #ThatFridayLinky

I agree with you completely on this. I don’t think much has changed except for the social media access but we are all guilty of that! #thatfridaylinky

Having worked with teens and despaired, I am always happy to be proved wrong. When Matthew injured his head in July, a gang of teens ran for help and restored my faith in the future #thatfridaylinky
