I have been a dad for 23 years and one of the most special parts of fatherhood for me has always been bedtime, and more importantly the bedtime story. You would think that after 23 years and five children I would have grown tired of reading bedtime stories, but the truth is I still love reading a bedtime story to my children. Well not the older children obviously! They are not so keen anymore, shame that haha, but we are lucky enough to able to read a bedtime story to our seven year old twin girls every night and we have done so from a very early age.
There is something very special about the bedtime story. Sitting on the bed with your little ones slowly falling asleep as they are listening to a bedtime story. There are probably not many types of children’s books I have decided that I have not read over the 23 years of being a dad. If I’m honest some I have loved and some not so much. For me the bedtime story book has to be simple, but exciting and grabs the attention of the child and also have really engaging illustrations.
So when I was recently sent Hannah the Spanner and her adventures books written by Stuart Simmonds and illustrated by Bill Greenhead for review, I instantly knew my girls would enjoy them. The books are written in such a style that the girls instantly connected with Hannah and loved listening to her adventures which was either about the dancing bear or the robot. The illustrations are magnificent and really engage with the child. The stories are current and something that kids can identify with and they possibly see themselves pretending to be Hannah on her adventures. That to me is the secret behind a good children’s book, bringing the story to life and Stuart has more than done that with Hannah the Spanner.
There is the most sweetest backdrop to how the Hannah the spanner stories came about. Stuart was inspired by his daughters to publish the stories. This is because when his children were little he used to make up stories at bedtime and he promised Hannah his daughter that one day he would turn them into real life books. Thankfully his wife told him to write down the stories he made up and then as he says she nagged him to get them published so on Hannah’s 21st birthday last year he presented her with the first editions. For me that is one of the most beautiful things you could do for your child. I’m sure it must have been a very special moment for father and daughter to cherish for ever.
Reading to your children is such important thing to do. It will encourage them to love reading. Sadly research figures have revealed that the number of children reading is dropping year on year. Reading can have a positive impact on brain development, happiness and academic success, and that in itself is telling me that we should be reading bedtime stories to our little ones much more, and after all it’s also a lovely way to finish the day.
Nowadays an incredible 88% of parents have said they wished they could read to their children at bedtime more often. We all lead busy lives, but making the time to read a bedtime story is so important and your children will never forget those times. The memory will live forever with them and of course this will be something that they then will hopefully do with their own children.
What makes these books about Hannah and her adventures for a bedtime story perfect? Well they are short stories full of lots of fun. The illustrations have so much action going on and if you look carefully you might even find Harry, the Karate Monkey who keeps Lucy, Stuart’s other daughter safe. Those adventures will be coming in 2020. The girls loved looking out for Harry in Hannah’s adventures. The Hannah the spanner stories are going to become a very regular bedtime story with my twin girls and there is no doubt that the stories can be enjoyed time and again. The girls loved the stories and pointing out things in the illustrations as we read the book, and I have to admit I loved the stories too!
The Dancing Bear and Robot books of the Hannah the Spanner adventures are the first in a series of seven which are being released throughout the course of this year. If you look carefully at the front cover in the corner there is going to be a book for everyday of the week. It says “this is not the sort of thing normally happens on a Monday” and so on for everyday of the week. I absolutely loved that idea but I’m sure it won’t matter what day you read the book.
They are available from major retailers such as Waterstones and Amazon. You can also purchase directly from StuHeadLtd.
Every now and again a new children’s book arrives on the scene and you just know it is going to become an instant hit with kids and Hannah the Spanner is one of those. They are fabulous stories and will become long term stories that we will be telling our children for years to come. It will pass on down through the generations as a classic children’s story.
