How Talking To Someone Helped Me Conquer Depression Finding The Right Therapist

May 21, 2018

Last week I wrote a post about the mental health issues I have had in my life for the unofficial There For Him campaign and the campaign for raising mental health issues during mental health awareness week.

All this got me to thinking about the time when I was most likely at my lowest point in my life. Severely depressed and on all sorts of medication that yes the medications were helping. But they weren’t totally solving the problem, I needed something more, the mental issues and depression I was suffering was just being kept under control I was healing myself.

I realised that I also needed to talk and stop bottling up all my emotions and thoughts. So my journey to finding a therapist that could help me unlock the unhappiness in my mind began. Finding a licenced therapist can now be done online. The first stop was to see my doctor and discuss the fact that yes the medications were helping. But could I be referred to a therapist so I could talk alongside the medications.

I have to admit I was very lucky to have a doctor that also believed that it is not all about taking medications he also believed that talking about mental health problems, it also part of the recovery from depression.

I was referred to a therapist, which was a huge turning point in my recovery I attended 12 sessions on a weekly basis and it help me process and identify many of things that were attributed to my depression. The most interesting thing is that some of the issues that were affecting my mental health were actually going back as far as my childhood. Which I don’t believe I would have discovered if I had not sat down with a therapist.

Mental health issues amongst men is far bigger than we realise and of course the reason is men simply don’t talk about it, and for many years I was guilty of this shutting it away, believing completely wrongly that it was a sign of weakness for men to talk about depression or any other mental health issues. This of course can lead to terrible consequences such as suicide.

Talking to a therapist can help you clear your mind and hopefully lesson the load the depression can have on your life.

It’s good to talk, so let’s talk!

Have you ever used a therapist. I would love to know if you have and if you thought it was beneficial.

I have had over 40 sessions of counselling, attended CBT and gone to couple’s counselling trying to get my mental health under control. These outlets are more informative than anyone could realsie before they utilise them, it’s so so soooo sad that they are chronically underfunded.
