How Technology Can Help With Home Maintenance

When I was growing up and in the early days of doing my job as a painter and decorator, I would find out how to do a particular job by watching an experienced painter and decorator, but the world has changed. We now have the internet and you can literally find out anything when it comes to home maintenance. Technology has definitely helped everybody in that respect, including me.

So I have teamed up with EON’s Master of your own home campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to show how home owners and renters are not confident in tackling everyday home maintenance tasks.

The survey came up with some fascinating insights. For instance, 19% struggle to read a meter, 65% struggled to re-pressurise their boiler and something very interesting that came out of the survey was that people are twice as likely to trust parents rather than a local tradesperson. One of the top reasons why people won’t tackle home maintenance is a lack of knowledge and fear that they may damage the property.

I have been tasked with solving a home maintenance job that I may otherwise have avoided due to my lack of knowledge, but with the help of Alexa via the Echo Dot and its technology I thought I would bleed all the radiators in my home. Some of which have simply not given off enough heat for a long time. I wasn’t sure of the reason as to why. I knew that water transferred the heat, but I didn’t realise that air pockets stop the water traveling all around the radiator and you need to bleed the air out of the system.

Finding a tutorial with a video to bleed a radiator was actually really easy to find online, and I would also be able to play the video on my phone. To help me bleed the radiator whilst I was doing it, it really was a step by step guide and very easy to follow, and made what felt before was an impossible home maintenance job, something I now had the confidence to tackle with the help of technology.

Once I watched the tutorial online bleeding the radiator was actually quite easy, and I took all the necessary steps to ensure I didn’t soak the carpet in some of my rooms.
