I Was Once Part Of A Happy Family Of Five
In the near future I will be doing a blog post about a company that basically revitalises all your old black & white photos.
So at this point I decided to raid my mum’s house for as many old black and white photos that I could find, and wow! What a shock I was in for.
Regular readers of my blog will on occasion come across posts that are about how dysfunctional and messed up my childhood was. So it came as a huge surprise when I came across about six or seven photos showing when I was part of a happy family of five on holiday.
I actually have very little recognition of this time, but then again I was only about four or five years old. We actually look like any other happpy family on holiday and I guess we most likely were. What was about to happen in the folllowing couple of years would live with us all forever, and two people would destroy what looks like a bubble of happiness.
Within two years my mother and father went down the path of self destruction. Looking back it was like a tornado taking out everything in its path. Unfortunately in this case, it’s collateral damage that would have a lifelong effect on the relationships that three innocent children had with each other.
One of the other photos I found was three small children on a boat, all giggling and having fun and smiling for the camera, with innocence painted all over their faces. It is was, I guess, what a happy family can look like.

This is of course my birth family. The fallout of all those years ago is still there today. Basically no relationships between two brothers and one sister. In fact my sister and brother have not spoken in over thirty years and I speak very occasionally to my sister, and I genuinely can’t remember the last time I had contact with my brother.
I was sat at the dining table looking at the photos and showing the photos to my wife and my five year old twins and explaining to them who everybody was. Then my wife asked me a question. She asked me how I felt looking at the pictures of my childhood.
I answered without hesitation with just one word, sad. Just sad. That this is how it’s all ended up. I also added that what an incredible waste of years it was, lifetimes changed forever.
The following day I had a long drive to do and it gave me time to reflect. So many families have a self destruct button and my birth family was no different and it certainly self destructed, unfortunately beyond repair.
The sadness for me is the waste and hatred that has manifested from two peoples selfishness without a moments thought to their children. Yes! Two will have a lot to answer too, and face the consequences of their unbelievable actions.
For all of that. it is so nice to see three siblings together and smiling, even if it was many years ago.
My impossible dream is one day we are reunited without misgivings, hate and the realisation that we are born from the same two people. Our common denominator which should make us bond, but I know that it wasn’t our fault what happened, which should have made us stronger, but pulled us apart year by year to where the gulf is now so wide that it seems impossible to bridge.
This post is written for my brother and sister, one day just maybe…

Such a moving post! Parents should, as you put it so well, be the foundation for strong sibling relationships – I’m so sorry that your parents couldn’t put their own issues aside to keep that foundation intact. I’m sure your experiences as a child made you much more determined to be a fantastic Dad to your own kids and if so then something very positive has resulted from those tough times. #ThatFridayLinky

Parents should know better. I find like you that the nasty memories, especially when they happen later, are the ones we end up remembering, especially when they’re so painful. It’s nice to see the happy pictures, hopefully adds some more colour to you memories. #thatfridaylinky

Oh, what a moving post, Nigel. I’m sorry that your parents’ behaviour lead to such a fall out for you and your siblings. No wonder you are such an amazing family man now.

I’m sorry things ended up that way for you! That’s such a powerful post and you are a great example to your children. I hope one day you’re “impossible dream” comes true. It’s so sad when children get mixed up in their parents problems. Well done for sharing

So sad that you are all missing each other’s lives. The sibling relationship should be one of the strongest. Here’s hoping at some point you can all put your parents issues behind you. #thatfridaylinky

Wow! What a post. Thank you for sharing such a personal and emotional post with us. Families are funny things, they don’t always work out and sadly it is often the children who end up being damaged by the fall out. I really hope that you and your siblings can come together and remember those happy times #ThatFridayLinky x

What absolutely beautiful photos Nige. I had tears in my eyes at the end of the post. I suggest you take your photos along to see your siblings. Even if the gulf between you can never be healed, it would be nice for them to realise, as you have, that that gulf wasn’t always there. Pen x #ThatFridayLinky

Aw, that is sad to remember I am sure. I love my siblings and I am so glad to have them in my life. I sometimes forget just how lucky I am.
This is a great lesson for your own children to appreciate their family and hold them dear. <3

I really hope they read this and make an effort to build a relationship with you and your family. My older two children’s dad and his family have no contact. It is so hard to stay positive about them without lying to my children. Kids deserve the best and as parents it is our responsibility to act as adults and work on relationships #thatfridaylinky

My word, that must have been a bit of a tough one to write. So sad the issues with your parents caused such major problems throughout your later life. Here’s hoping one day you might just get that reunion. Great photos Nigel, regardless of what happened next, Thanks for hosting #ThatFridayLinky

Beautiful, Nige. I didn’t see one of my sisters for six years between when I was ten and sixteen. That’s a long time for a child. And when we met up it was weird at first. So I have a taste of what you feel.

A really lovely but sad post to read. I cant understand what it must be like to not have a relationship with siblings however I do know what its like to have rifts within a family and that is hard enough! Lovely photos!

Awww I have not read any of your other posts about your birth family but I can only imagine based on what you have said here… and I am so sorry this happened to you and your siblings. I guess you know this already but it is totally not your fault and the times you had as children and in a happy family environment should be cherished. I know it is hard as I have had similar feelings towards photographs from my past… but you were happy then. It was a happy time. Excited to see the photographs remastered too! #thatfridaylinky

Im so sorry to hear about your relationship with your siblings. I unfortunately have a broken relationship with both of my brothers due to their wrong doings.
Its strange how having your own children makes you realise that although it is sad, it is not the end of the world. Their loss and we can rise above it and be better off without them. These photos are adorable though! #Thatfridaylinky

What a touching post. I got back on touch with my dad a few years ago after we stopped speaking about 15 years before. My auntie recently put together an album of childhood photos and it was really surreal seeing photos of a different life to the one I had with my mum as I don’t remember it that well or fondly. Thanks for hosting #thatfridaylinky

Oh Nige this made me so sad. Families are so difficult at times, it’s true what they say you can’t choose your family, and we don’t always get on. It’s lovely that you have those memories together and as you say, one day…maybe. My brother and I don’t really speak, I see him just once a year maybe and I know should anything happen to my parents we would never have contact. This made me feel so sad but beautifully written. There are so many painful family memories that have been kept alive and cherished for so many years which have made an important contribution to the happiness and peace at last feelings presented here by a number of good people. All of them have shared in the pain of their kith and kin without allowing any surviving bitterness to intrude on their lives in any kind of negative way. For that relief my sincerest thanks to each and everyone concerned because your maturity and restraint has also been a great help to me. I was born in Cork in 1938 but I now live in Cardiff, the capital of Wales, a great place to live and to make live!
