Installing a dado rail
I have recently been employed to decorate inside a terraced house property which includes installing a dado rail to the hall, landing and stairs.
The reason the client wants a dado rail is so that they can paint the top half in emulsion and wallpaper the bottom half.
Installing a dado rail is very easy and not very expensive.
The first thing to do is to measure the height of the wall and the dado rail should be installed at one third up from the skirting board. Mark the height you want in pencil and draw a straight line.
Next you’ll need to saw the dado rail to the length required. Hold the dado rail up against the wall and drill holes through the dado rail ensuring that you mark the wall with drill at the same time so that you know where it matches up.
Drill all of the holes into the wall and use raw plugs to screw the dado rail to the wall using countersunk screws so they disappear into to the wood.
When it comes to corners use a mitre saw or a mitre saw box to get the right angle required.
Once all the dado rail is installed fill the holes left by the screws then prime the wood undercoat and finally top coat in your choice of finish.
