It’s Time To Get Out In The Greenhouse. Summer Is Here

April 25, 2018

As we enter the month of May, it can mean only one thing. Summer is nearly here! This ultimately means we can all start getting out into the garden on a more regular basis. Basking in the UK’s glorious sunshine, well sometimes! I’m sure you know what I mean!

In our home this is great news because we have six year old twin girls who love nothing more than spending most of their time in our garden playing game and running around! However, they also love gardening with mummy and daddy.

The most important part of having a successful garden during those summer months is preparation. This starts through the long winter months. Of course very little can be done outside which is where a greenhouse is vital to start growing your seeds as they will be protected from the winter weather.

I have a greenhouse which is used to it’s maximum, but it was also beginning to look a bit old, and actually it simply was not big enough. As such I decided to get on the internet to see what was available to upgrade my greenhouse. While browsing I came across the Shed Store. They offer a fantastic and very comprehensive range of greenhouses at competitive prices to suit all gardens. Shed Store has been operating since the year 2000. They offer free delivery and have a call centre that offers any advice you may need in deciding what’s best for your garden. I would highly recommend them as a first stop when looking for a new greenhouse.

The best thing about greenhouses is that you can bring all your plants on and prepare and grow them during the winter months so they can be transferred to your garden in the spring. Then all you have to do is sit in the sun and watch them bloom. Well, not quite, you still have to mow the lawn, and do some weeding and water them, but you know what I mean!

My twin girls and I love to grow vegetables and herbs, and this is where a greenhouse is perfect. As well as transferring vegetables that you have grown from seeds to the garden, many vegetables such as tomatoes will grow and ripen in a greenhouse perfectly throughout the summer months.

I believe it’s so important to teach our children that growing vegetables is vital, and that not everything is available at your local supermarket. At some point everything that is sold at a supermarket has to be grown, which, I believe will in turn give them a sense of achievement that they planted little seeds, watched them grow and then the best bit, they get to eat it when it’s ready. Another important lesson is that it’s teaching them a healthy eating lifestyle in this world of fast food.

Pottering away in a greenhouse is actually very relaxing and when your children get involved it is great quality time together. Let’s be honest finding quality time with your children is very hard to find in this world where we are all leading very busy lives, so it’s lovely to take time out and get back to nature even if only for a little while.

Of course my greenhouse is also the perfect place to hide when I’m looking for some peace and quiet. Haha! If only! My girls always seem to know where to find me.

Do you have a greenhouse? Do you prepare your garden for summer, and start planting up early so your garden looks amazing through the summer? I would love to hear.

We haven’t even thought about getting our garden spring/summer ready yet! Sam did pick up Gardener’s World magazine at the weekend and it came with some free seeds so we need to get cracking.

We don’t have a greenhouse ourselves, but my parents have one that the kids use regularly. At the moment, their sunflowers are in there getting a head start before being put in our back garden!
