M had a simple accident that required surgery
A couple of days ago M trapped her wedding ring finger in the front door. The door was not shut tight, but it cut across the top of the nail and it bled a lot and to be honest it stopped bleeding eventually so we decided not to go to A&E.
When M decided around 4.30pm to allow us to look at it we decided it was a nasty cut and to be on the safe side a trip to A&E was needed.
On our arrival we were dealt with by triage very quickly and the first mention of the finger needing an operation was mentioned when she had an X Ray to rule out any broken bones. Thankfully there weren’t any.
We then saw the orthopaedic surgeon and he confirmed she would need a procedure to mend the nail bed and ensure that the new nail grew correctly.
We were allowed home overnight and asked to return at 7.00am.
What was a simple accident and I might add a very common accident which I was thinking would be bandaged up and they would send us on our way so it was a shock to be told she would need an operation, very scary!
The following morning we woke early and arrived at the Noah’s ark children’s hospital.
By midday there was no sign of the operation happening and M at this point was very thirsty and hungry and beginning to feel a bit unhappy. Finally at 1pm I spoke to the surgeon and he said it would definitely be going ahead at 3pm
Hopefully me speaking to him made sure it happened today I must admit I was quite forceful but polite.
The wait has been tough and long, but the hospital in fairness has an abundance of toys to occupy the kids.
M was taken up at 3.07pm for her operation and she was the bravest little girl ever. She never whimpered or cried and she did everything asked of her. She was put to sleep using gas so that they could put the IV in later. I was so very proud of her.
All of this was done while she was in my arms which was one of the strangest most emotional moments of my life. I believe we are here to protect our children and all of sudden that is taken from me and I have to have a massive leap of faith in trusting what I consider strangers to look after my child,that is incredibly difficult for me.The nurse then said to give her a kiss and say goodbye which set me off. My children just bring the tears out of me so easily I guess that’s love.
Just over an hour later I went up to recovery and M was fast asleep, but coming around slowly. I spoke to the surgeon and he said all went well and no problems were encountered.
M has a massive bandage on her hand and that will be there for a while and she will need to come to clinic in a few days time. To check all is healing well.
A very long day but the NHS have done a fantastic job. As usual their care is second to none. We arrived home eventually at 8.45pm a big shift.
Finally to my beautiful wife don’t blame yourself, accidents happen and it’s no ones fault .

Who would have thought trapping a finger in a door would require surgery, it's such a common thing for little ones to do. Hope it all heals quickly.

How horrible for your all! My two seem to get their fingers shut in things all the time but we've never had anything this bad. Bless her 🙁 #BinkyLinky

Ah, poor thing 🙁 Hope she's recovering well. Agree with your end comment totally, these things happen and it's no one's fault. Hope Mrs Nigel is doing okay too

Oh gosh – this sends shivers through me as it is so easily done. Our biggest toddler is into slamming doors at the moment and he has almost missed the smaller toddler so many times. #BinkyLinky

Your daughter managing to trap her finger in the door must have been bad enough let alone having to endure an operation too. But at least it is all over with now. I hope your wife doesn't really blame herself, accidents do happen and children will always be bumping and knocking themselves. Hope your daughter loses the bandage very soon.
