MOT Month Might Not Be So Bad After All

February 5, 2018

Any car owner dreads the annual MOT. We all know that it’s necessary to keep us safe and ensure our vehicles are road worthy. But, oh, how you could do without the yearly stress of it. Each time your MOT is coming up, you start hoarding all the pennies you can, sure that it’s going to cost you this year. With the risk of exploration at hand, you begin to spot danger signs you didn’t even know your vehicle was showing. It’s going to be a write-off, you just know it. How are you ever going to afford a new car?

All this and more goes through most of our minds when MOT month rolls around. It’s a stressful time, not least because it’s going to set you back a fair amount, even if all is well. And, if it isn’t, things look even bleaker. Of course, if you want to stay on the right side of the law, an MOT is essential. In fact, driving without one could lead to fines and even legal proceedings. On top of which, it puts you and others around you at risk. But, staying legal isn’t the only reason you should embrace your MOT. Here are a few of the other reasons it may not be so bad after all.

A chance to check in

As mentioned above, it’s around this time of year that we start to think our cars aren’t running as they should. For the most part, it’s all down to paranoia and worry. But, getting a clean MOT certificate can really put your mind at risk. Finally, you can stop worrying about that strange sound you hear when you start the engine. All is a-okay. Plus, while your car is in the garage, you could always get those customisations you’ve had your eye on for a while. This may be an extra cost, but it’ll give you a reason to look forward to that MOT letter coming through your door.

Protection while you’re on the road

Your MOT certificate also offers you protection while you’re out on the road. As mentioned, it keeps you on the right side of the law. It also ensures that, if someone else causes an accident, they can’t say your vehicle was at fault. If they try, your car accident attorney  can pull out that MOT certificate and prove them wrong. Hence, you stand to gain a full settlement. All thanks to a few hours in the garage.

A money-saver

Before you laugh this one off, think about it. Sure, your MOT might cost you right now. In fact, if work needs doing, it could set you back a fair amount. BUT, you can be sure the amount you pay now would be less than if an issue reared its ugly head later. MOT mechanics can spot and solve problems before they reach the realms of breaking the bank. As such, the small expense you pay now could save you hundreds down the line.

The MOT and service are both horrendous. As you say, you always wonder how much it will set you back. It makes a big difference having a garage you can trust to not take advantage of you. I always think it’s worth looking over some of the MOT test items first yourself and doing some checks before it goes in, that way you may avoid a fail, e.g. screenwash, check tyres pressure and tread etc
