6 Tips For A Greener And Healthier Home
We all dream of easing a little pressure off our conscience every now and then. Creating a greener home is something to aspire to, and is one step forwards in securing our children’s future. We also want our home to be healthy as well as green.
It can be, however, a daunting task. What’s supplies do I need? How will it affect my outgoings? Is it more effort that it’s worth? Don’t worry, you can create a greener home in many different ways. Making changes, no matter how large or small, has an impact – so it’s worth trying.
1. Use energy-saving lightbulbs
Many people have taken the leap into energy-saving lightbulbs already. They’re incredibly efficient and you can barely tell the difference. They might be a little pricier to purchase in the first instance than your regular lightbulbs, but they can save you around £9 on your annual electricity bill. Over their lifetime, this could add up to £100 back into your pocket.
2. Open up windows
Although nice weather is rare to come by in Britain, when you do get a bit of sunshine and warmth, open up the windows in your home. It’s a great way to freshen the air and make it feel instantly healthier.
3. Use carbon monoxide detectors
Carbon monoxide is a silent killer, and you’d be a fool to ignore the very serious risk it poses to you and your family. It’s odourless, and therefore you can’t detect it without this piece of kit. You can pick them up for a decent price. Regardless of price though, it’s nothing compared to the safety it brings.
4. Ditch pesticides
Although pesticides can be helpful in dealing with pest problems, over-exposure can lead to health problems – not to mention, they’re not cheap. Focus on preventative measures by keeping your house clean and sealing cracks in walls that rodents could use as an entry point. For your lawn, put some elbow grease into manually doing the work.
5. Ditch the processed stuff
An obvious one, but it’s so often overlooked. Processed food is incredibly bad for you and your family. Focusing on fresh and healthy produce means you’re on the right track to living healthier. Paired with an exercise routine, you’ll be feeling the benefits before you know it.
6. Control dust
If you or anyone in your family has allergies, dust can be the worst enemy in your home. The most expensive solution is to replace your carpets with tile or wood flooring. If you’re on a budget, or just love your carpeted style, ensure you vacuum frequently and keep surfaces as clean as possible.
These are just some of the ways you can keep you and your home healthy. What other tips have you got?
