Time To Get Gardening With Your Kids

With spring just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about all the different vegetables we can grow in our garden. There is nothing quite like the taste of freshly homegrown vegetables straight from the garden to the plate.

My five year old twin girls love gardening, in fact they have a gardening club at their primary school, which they are hoping to join this year.

So this year, I have teamed up with Great Little Garden to create a garden within our garden just for my twin girls to grow their very own vegetables. The girls will have a wooden log planter so that they can grow their own vegetables. It will be interesting to see who grows the best vegetables! They are not competitive, well, maybe a little bit so I’m sure they will be out in the garden checking how their vegetables and herbs are growing.

Great little Garden is a fantastic website that has absolutely everything you will need for your garden. Their planter section is vast making it difficult to pick just one planter! I wanted them all!

We need a planter that will be suitable for the girls to have their very own garden within our garden. We decided on this particular raised wooden log planter. I will say though that the selection of plastic, metal and wooden planters was extensive, so I would imagine that what ever you are looking for you will find it on Great Little Garden’s website. Nowadays so much can be found online and this really is a top class gardening website. I highly recommend you check them out.

Ordering was simple and easy to do. I even had a text reminder to tell me the date I could expect my delivery, and it was delivered exactly on the day I was told. It came as a flat pack so it was easy to carry into the house before assembling. Putting the planter together was very simple and took only about 30 minutes from start to finish. Once our planter was assembled the girls and I decided it was time to visit our local garden centre to buy compost and seeds. A popular choice for both of our girls was carrots, and I’m pretty sure that was to do with the fact that just recently the girls have had their first pet, a rabbit called Snuggles! Other Vegetables that the girls wanted to grow included lettuce, radish, and some different herbs.

When we got home the girls were raring to go. Actually they were desperate to grow some vegetables, or like a lot of children they just like to get covered in mud lol! I would imagine it’s most likely a bit of both.

We planted all the vegetables and herbs that the girls wanted to grow, and gave them a good first watering. Now for the hard bit, well at least for the girls anyway, and that’s waiting for something to grow.

There is something very exciting and inspiring watching your children do some gardening. Something that they can watch from start to finish, and see their hard work pay off, and then get to eat what they have grown. It’s also a valuable lesson in life that not everything has to come from the supermarket. You can actually grow your own vegetables. This will hopefully lead to a healthy lifestyle as they grow up.
