My encounter with royalty

August 20, 2015

A few years ago I had an interesting, but rather unusual encounter with the royal family.

My mum went shopping in town and as usual she caught the bus, but quite often she’ll ask me to pick her up to take her home and that’s what I did on this particular day.
I think I heard somewhere on the radio that Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, Camillla, were visiting Cardiff, but I have to be honest I’m not really a royalist so I wasn’t bothered.
I picked my mum up from town at about 4.30pm and we drove north out of Cardiff city centre. This is a dual carriageway and as we got about one mile away from the city centre the traffic was very minimal considering the time of day. Anyways I carried on and saw some police motorcyclists blocking exit junctions which I found odd a bit odd, but I didn’t really think anything of it.
Then in my rear view mirror I saw a convoy of police cars and black range rovers. I was signalled by a police motorcyclist to stop which I did. Then as the convoy passed I shouted at mum, “oh my god it’s Charlie and Camilla!”

They flew past quite quickly and the police motorcyclists took off behind the convoy.

Now this was where the fun really started.

With my mother egging me on to catch them up so she could be next to them again I slowly caught up with them.

Now you would think that with a police motorcyclist waving furiously at me to pull over I would do just that, but no, not a chance!

I think under my mothers encouragement I speeded up! As I got closer to the rear Land Rover I saw a number of royalty protection officers just looking at me, but I still had no reason to stop. How stupid of me!

As I got nearer to the Range Rover it swerved across the road bringing me to a halt and all my mother saw was the convoy disappearing into the distance!

To this day my mother and I have quite a laugh about it! Our encounter with royalty was over!

I don't think I would have had the nerve to try to follow them. We often get our road closed and the convoys coming along, last ones we had down here was Prince William

I don't think I would've done the same in fear of them pulling out weapons on me haha! It's certainly one way to get up close with royalty however #anythinggoes
