So far this summer the weather has been very good in comparison to our usual British summer. We normally have two weeks of sun, then it rains for two months solid. Haha! But hey, that’s the UK!
Last Saturday we decided to go to a local beach about a 20 minute drive away from home. The main reason being was that the girls had been on a school trip there on the Thursday and wanted to go back.
It’s quite a strange feeling as I had not been to this particular beach for many years. In fact since I was a child myself, and I had some fond memories of spending the day at the beach when I was part of a family unit before it all went wrong, when I was about eight years old. So it did feel a little bit bittersweet.
On Saturday though we were there as a family and a lot of water had passed under the bridge since my childhood.
We arrived early at about 9.30am and R and M were very excited! They had their bucket and spades at the ready for building sand castles. It wasn’t difficult to find a good spot as the beach was quite empty.
The girls got digging and were loving every minute at Whitmore Bay or more commonly known as Barry Island. The beach and whole area is beautifully clean and the sea is one of best in the whole of Europe nowadays and there are always people walking around cleaning up which really impressed me.
It wasn’t long before the girls wanted to wander down to the waters edge and I actually wanted to as well. Watching the girls splash around and jumping over the waves is very magical. It’s simple fun and doesn’t cost anything, but they were loving every minute.
We had lunch on the beach which was beginning to fill up quite a bit by now. Once lunch was done the girls had to go down to sea again and I have admit I expected the water to be freezing, but it was actually quite warm. For a minute I felt I could have been in the Balearic Islands! That is the great thing about the UK. If the weather is good, we have some of best beaches in the world on the Welsh coastline.
R and M had a fantastic time splashing in the sea, building sandcastles and then doing the statuary burying each other in the sand!
We then went and played on the amusements on the sea front and the girls won a couple of prizes.
What amazed me was all of a sudden it was 3pm and the day had gone so quickly! It was a great day full of wonderful memories.

We LOVE the UK beach in the summer!! We usually head to Dorset, it’s so beautiful there. It’s become a bit of a tradition… as well as a lovely holiday abroad when we get the chance! The girls look like they had a blast!!

We live in North Devon, so near to several wonderful beaches, we tend to avoid during the summer, apart from for dog walking, as they are over crowded with tourists, or grockles as we locals call them!
