My wife and I are self employed and consequently we need a shared office space in our home. We are lucky enough to live in a big enough property to allow us to have an office of a reasonable size.
I’m a painter and decorator and often have clients visit me to discuss colours and designs. It is much easier for me that they visit because I can show them on a computer what their ideas will look like and we can discuss colours, because as you can imagine there are thousands of colours to choose from nowadays.
My wife and I also do a lot of work in our office so it’s important for us to make it a pleasant, but productive environment. With the right colours it can help to inspire you.
Our office of recent times has been neglected so I thought it was time to completely renovate the office from top to bottom.
First up was to get the paint off the ceilings and walls and re-paint them. I decided to stay with a pure brilliant white emulsion for the ceiling. It’s not the lightest room, so I thought white for the ceiling would be perfect to reflect some light into the room.
The walls were a little more difficult to decide, because I was looking for a colour that would be tranquil and calm to enable a good working environment and create a comfortable feeling especially when clients visit. So I went with a natural beige colour creating warmth but also a professional feel.
Finally the woodwork in a brilliant white satinwood finish.
The biggest decision for me was what do we put on the floor, currently there is carpet, and yes it’s ok, but I feel that it’s not in keeping with being an office especially one where clients occasionally visit.
So I looked around and decided on wood flooring. My only problem was what type of wood flooring? I took a look on-line and came across two that would be suitable. The first was engineered oak flooring. This is perfect for our particular office. It’s easier to fit if you like a bit of DIY and it can be sanded and maintained for many years to come, because it’s not a walkway, and engineered oak flooring is a great choice. Easily maintained.
The other option was solid wood flooring. It’s considered to be one of the most eco friendly types of flooring. It’s a single piece of hardwood which is cut by a machine for size and shape. It can be sanded constantly and will probably last a lifetime and totally natural, but is probably better in high traffic areas throughout your home, which my office is not so I have decided on engineered oak flooring.
My office was now completely renovated and looking very clean and professional. It was time to add a new desk and chair and a two seater sofa. I decided on a bold colour for the sofa to complement the natural looking walls. I also added two mirrors to create a feeling of space.
