Renting can be a nightmare
We have been currently renting a property for 11 months in a 12 month contract.
About three months ago the owners sent around estate agents to value the property. They are an old couple who live a couple hundred of miles away with their daughter. We knew that the writing was on the wall and the family have decided to sell.
So I decided to see our letting agents and have arranged another property to rent in the same area and catchment for our twin girls to stay at same school a very important priority for us.
We’re now waiting to see if the landlord wants us to see out the 12 months or do the right thing and allow us to leave a month early. Although I’m not holding my breath.
It is really a nightmare. This year we were hoping to buy our own property, but this has been put on hold for another 12 months because it would simply be impossible to sort out in time.
On a personal note this is our third move in four years making me feel like a gypsy and I get very stressed and all this unnessecary cost, but it has to be done.
If you rent in this country there is really no security of tenure whereas in most European countries they have that.
The laws need to be changed to give tenants a fairer deal because to be honest we are not treated that well and after all we are paying a lot of money. There is a huge amount of profiteering going on. Rent should have a reasonable cap that’s fair for tenants and landlords.
On the up side I was probably not going to have a holiday this year, but now I will definitely be going away.

I had no idea renting was so stressful but we had the worst year in rented property last year. We moved into a lovely large property and from the start the landlord was a little unco-operative such as not moving his his stuff out until 3 weeks after we'd moved in (it had to be stored in one of the spare rooms and garage). We just let it go and carried on with moving in. A week after we'd moved in we started receiving letters from the landlords mortgage company and it transpired that he was in arrears on his mortgage – £16,000 worth! The letters said that if it wasn't sorted then the house would be repossessed! Talk about stressful and not what you want a week after moving in. My husband had to go to court with the estate agent to get the repossession order extended (the landlord was working in Dubai and wasn't responding to any emails) and so we had another two months for him to sort it out. Still no word from the landlord so we had no choice but to find somewhere else to live. Luckily the estate agent was really good and gave us our deposit straight back but it was a big pain in the arse because we had to fork out £500+ in estate agent fees again once we'd found another house. not to mention all the faff that goes with moving such as post redirection, change of addresses and utilities. We moved out the week of the repossesion and got a call from the estate agent a few days later to say that the landlord had paid up at the last minute and the repossession had been lifted!!!!!! Glad we moved out though because who needs a landlord like that but we're still really angry that we had to go through all that. Moving with children is not fun is it!
