A few weeks ago we moved into a three bed bungalow. It’s a huge improvement on our previous home, but it needed a few improvements to make it feel more like home.
Did you know that most homeowners think DIY is about creating a look or style in their own home without expert help. That’s according to recent research conducted by Homebase. What’s more consumers are increasingly using ‘friendspiration’ to achieve their look
55% of shoppers say they use friends (offline and online) to get ideas for styles, products and colours. I tend to think this is true, even more so because I’m a painter and decorator for a living. So as well as looking to my friends and their homes for inspiration, I also use my customers ideas for inspiration too.
Homebase is launching a new portal called ‘The Project Centre‘ where customers can find inspiration as well as help and advice for their own home projects.
On average, shoppers spend 29 days researching ideas before kicking off a project, and then spend £243 on updating home decor.
With this in mind Homebase sent us £243 worth of vouchers to create our very own room makeover.
We decided that we would makeover our living room as this is the room that we spend most of our time in.
Here are some ‘before’ pictures:
As you can see each wall had been painted magnolia so this gave the room no character or style. Our aim was to style the room to our preference.
What we did
To start with I prepared all the surfaces by making sure any loose paint was removed, any wallpaper that had lifted was stuck back down and I also filled any holes that needed to be filled.
I decided to use Farrow and Ball Estate Emulsion as it would give me a very low sheen finish.
For the three main walls I painted in Farrow and Ball Slipper Satin which cost £38.99 for 2.5L. I used two tins of this paint as I applied two coats to all three walls.
The decision was to pick a colour for the feature wall that contrasted nicely with our new sofas which are a silver grey colour and also with our new mink coloured curtains which we bought from Homebase for £34.99. So keeping this in mind I decided to use Farrow and Ball Estate Emulsion Pavillion Grey for the feature wall. This cost £38.99 and one tin was sufficient to apply to two coats to the feature wall.
I decided to use Farrow and Ball Estate Emulsion paint because it has a very unique range of colours and the colour you see on the colour chart is the colour you end up with on your wall.

With the room looking more like home, it was time to add the finishing touches to help make if feel like home.

I always struggle to finally pull the trigger on projects, we moved in in August and did our first room in March after months of thinking and planning lol.
