So You Won’t Change When You Become A Parent? HaHa!

May 30, 2017

There are some things that really amuse me in life, and one particular situation that never ceases to raise a smile and a little giggle if I’m honest is listening to people who have no children, but are possibly planning a family in the near future. Hearing them saying that having a baby won’t change the way they live their lives.

OMG!

It will change you to the point where you won’t recognise yourself at times. Believe me I have five children and I am not even close to how I was before having children.

Of course there will always be exceptions to the rule and a couple that come to mind are of Prince William and his missus. The times I have heard them say they are hands on parents. Really? Who are they kidding? They are constantly jetting around the world, and where are their sprogs during this? Back home being look after by an army of nannies. Still when the tax payer is picking up the bill it’s easily done. My rant on royalty finished. I’m sure you can tell I’m a royalist, NOT!

So what changes when you become a parent? Here are a few, but I’m sure many more can be added.

1. Spontaneity. It’s gone! No longer can you just go to the cinema or for a meal, deciding it’s a good idea and you are sitting down 10 minutes later.

2. Romance. On a spur of the moment any time of the day you jump into bed and get it on, nowadays you have a time slot that works around the kids being in bed or at school.

3. TV. Watching grown-up tv not CBeebies day in day out and eventually you know every character and probably every line in every show because I’m convinced they have a seven day repeat on them, haha!

4. Gaming. I used to play Xbox for hours and hours and hours. Now my beloved Xbox is a very expensive DVD player for guess who? My children! They even own that now!

5. Money. Being single or a couple you had money to burn, to spend as and when you want, and if you spent all of your money, you didn’t need to worry as you could wait the three days to payday. No longer the case! You have to budget because it is apparently not acceptable to allow your children to go hungry.

6. Identity. This is one that has always amused me. There was a time that I had a name and I was an individual. Not a anymore! Now I just someone’s dad with no name.

There are of course so many other things that change in your life when you become a parent. Sleep is something of the past. A lie-in on a Sunday? Please, oh, please! Can I have it back! You become a dad taxi, dad bank, to name but a few.

So for those thinking of starting a family, be warned your life will change beyond regonition, but it’s worth every single second because having children is a blessing and beautiful beyond comparison experience. Yes it alters you as as an individual, but it also completes you as a human being.

So next time you hear somebody saying that they won’t change after having children, speak up and tell them that they will, but that it’ll make them a better person for it.

Would love to know your thoughts.

Definitely true. Everyone, I think changes because as a parent you have to adjust to this new little baby that you have created. I did say to my friend though who works from home creating gorgeous floral works that she can still do that even when she has a baby. She would just need to adjust the timings to only work when the baby is napping and possibly work into the evenings. 🙂

The biggest thing for me is gaming and football – I used to be a season ticket holder pre-kids but it’s impossible to attend regularly when little ones come along. They are older now though so I’m thinking of renewing in a few years (and bringing them with me).

Oh how I miss being able to waste hours on the XBox….how does my 10 year old have time to do this but I don’t?

All of this is so so true. It makes me laugh how at school we refer to people as ‘Tom’s Mummy / Daddy’, not actually knowing names! As for spontaneity, I don’t have the energy for that anymore, haha!

Amen to this! Our romantic moments consist of bed sharing with our toddler, falling asleep on the sofa like an oap couple and just dreaming about the day we get to starfish in our bed…alone! You’ve got it spot on with your post. #TriumphantTales

I really don’t remember life before kids and what i had to give up, as i didn’t feel i’d given up on anything just made changes, may have had something to do with the fact i was 20 when my first was born, so all i’d experienced to that date was just constant change

spontinety, identity, time and money are all things that have been affected by becoming a parent, but the one thing I could not do without is sleep. Ben MUST get this as he’s slept through for nearly 12 hours every night since 3 months old. He may wake up around 11pm as we’re heading to bed which a quick bottle whilst we pot around getting ready for sleep fixes and then its snoozeland!
Thanks you for sharing this with us at #TriumphantTales, I hope to see you back next week!

I love this post Nige. It really does change you doesn’t it. I totally agree it’s all for the better and somehow along the way you get rounded off into a stronger and mostly better person. Though in someways, I do miss being able to make a decision on the spot about doing something, and just going for it. Usually involving tea and cake…so perhaps not being able to go is a blessing! #DreamTeam

Dear ‘someone’s dad’, I couldn’t agree more. I do think your definition of romance was hilarious. Not a flower or candlelit dinner mentioned lol. If memory serves correctly, I think I was one of those numpties that couldn’t understand why people nearly fell apart at the thought of leaving their kids for a week or something. I don’t think I thought life wouldn’t change…but I’ve had 3 kids so I can’t remember ANYTHING. You need to add that bit…your brain just melts after kids. #dreamteam

I don’t know how people honestly believe they will stay exactly the same after having a child. It’s just not possible! #ThatFridayLinky

I agree, particularly when they are young, your life is no longer your own and everything revolves around them but I am finding that as my children get older (mine are 19, 18, 15 and 12) that I am starting to have a lot more freedom as they are more independent, its not all over!! 😉

OK I get it, I have two under the age of five and to some extent empathise with you but do you really believe you loose all spontaneity, romance, identity? Life is for living, come one man it isn’t all doom and gloom.

You nailed it summing up, there is a lot of change and it is ALL worth it in the end! 😀

Nothing kills romance like triple checking the door locks and pausing in complete silence to listen for crying kids!

If someone says being a parent won’t change them, they’re probably not ready to be a parent because everything becomes about them, and nothing about you … or they’re delusional … that happens too.

I don’t think anything really prepares you for how much you change! Just ‘popping’ to the shop is something that I miss – it’s a military mission that takes twenty minutes (on a good day) to get ready to go and buy milk! Ha Ha!
    Wouldn’t change it though!! #ThatFridayLinky

If having children doesn’t change you there is something very wrong. Having these little people who start life utterly dependent on you for everything is a profound experience and also quite scary at times. Of course stuff like sleep, money and free time would be nice to have, but I don’t know any parents that reget the decision to have children! #ThatFridayLinky

I don’t think anyone is prepared for how parenthood changes you, and each child changes you in different ways. Finding out is all part of the fun.

So true! All of my child less girl friends are adamant that when they have kids they’ll still work the same and do everything they used to,l. It’s hilarious really and I can’t wait to see the reality set it when they do have children haha #ThatFridayLinky
