Some DIY Home Improvements And Ideas

June 18, 2020

The pandemic that has been sweeping the world has left a large part of the population at home due to lockdown, but this has given many people the opportunity to do many home improvements that maybe they simply didn’t have time to do when they were working full-time.

Many homeowners of course are only DIY enthusiasts and when it comes to tackling those much need home improvements, they can quite often become overwhelmed by the sheer task of a home improvement project. It’s also important when you embark on a project that you have an idea of costs.

You may well have ideas of how you want a project to work such as re-decorating your bedroom, so when you are looking at costs and to make sure your ideas are doable. A great place to look is HomeHow. They have cost guides and lot of fantastic ideas for the home and plenty more.

So if you are looking to do some home improvements, here are a few jobs that anybody could tackle. Just make sure you have a set plan, budget and timescale in which to complete the project.

1. Re-decorating a room in your home.

The first thing to decide is what sort of finish do you want on the walls and is it achievable. If you have wallpaper on the walls currently and you want to paint the walls in emulsion paint, then the first thing you will need to do is remove the old wallpaper. For this I would recommend a wallpaper steamer as it will make it an effortless task.

Once all the wallpaper is removed you can check the condition of the walls and if they need repairing. At this point there are two options. You can either fill and sand the walls smooth or you could line all the walls in lining paper and then paint the walls. Either way it will give an ultra smooth finish.

2. Shelving

Many DIY enthusiasts stay away from putting up shelves. What usually puts people off is, it that involves drilling holes in the wall.

Putting up a shelf is a simple easy home improvement. Just work out exactly where you want your shelf, measure where the brackets are going to go and then make sure the marks where you are going to drill your holes are level with a spirit level.

Drill your holes, put a rawplug in the hole and fix the bracket using a screw and fix your new shelf to the bracket with screws, and that is all you to do to have a nice new shelf to display your photo frames or whatever you want.

3. Installing a garden shed

Outside the home in the garden you may find you have nowhere to keep garden tools or garden equipment. The answer to this is simply to build a garden shed which can be done very easily. Most garden sheds are sold nowadays in a flatpack and everything you need to assemble the shed is included in the pack including full instructions. My only suggestion is, it is a two person job, so make sure you have somebody on hand to help to assemble the shed. It’s the perfect place for keeping all your garden tools and accessories.

During this time of lockdown we have all had time to do some jobs around the home and many of them can be done by even an inexperienced DIYER.

What home improvements have you made to your home during lockdown? I would love to hear in the comments below.
