Sometimes The Toughest Decisions Can Bring The Most Happiness says

August 15, 2017

In my life I have been faced with some tough decisions. Usually those decisions have come about because I have been unhappy with my life in some way or another.

In my late teens I went to Australia because my brother who was living there and he told me come out you will love it here, warm weather, beaches in abundance and just a better way of life. So I thought why not. I'm just 18 years old without a care in the world. That was where my big mistake was. I went out to Australia. I removed myself from everything that I had grown up with, friends family and surroundings that were my comfort zone.

After four years and a couple of visits back home and I say home meaning Cardiff my hometown because although I had fun living in Australia. It was never home. I knew I had to go back home. It was where I belonged and it was where my heart was. I took that final flight out of Australia knowing I would never return and I remember sitting on the plane a happy man. Needless to say I never returned.

Another tough decision, if not the toughest decision I have ever made in my life involved my three oldest children from my first marriage. The marriage was dead and buried and had been for a very long time, but like a lot people you keep at it, but it's a big mistake or at least it was for me. This was probably where I was at the most unhappiest in my life. I was truly miserable which left me on medication for depression and at one point drinking far too much alcohol, where it had become a problem. So I had a decision to make because I simply couldn't live in this unhappy state of mind any longer.

What made this decision very tough was I knew by splitting with my wife and per usual the husband tends to leave the family home.

What I was giving up was not seeing my children wake up in the morning or seeing them go to bed at night and of course everything in between, but I had to leave because I needed to be happy. Telling my children I was leaving their mother was incredibly hard which I have written about before. This decision was a tough one to make and I definitely thought for a long time I had made the wrong decision, but as time went by I became a happier person so I knew it was the right decision not only for me, but also my children because they had a happy dad, and that's a good thing.

My final example of making tough decisions to make you happier is not about me, but my beautiful wife. My wife has worked for the same company for 11 years. They are a very large public company. A couple of months ago the department she was working for closed down and all the staff were given three options. Redundancy, move to do the same job but in another city, or they would find alternative work within the company. My wife took the third option although the hours were very different and involved working a shift that would involve not being there for our twin girls bedtime.

After just a week I knew it was killing her not to be there for their bedtime so we talked and it was plain to see my wife was not happy. After working somewhere for 11 years it's a difficult decision to leave especially when you don't have a job to go to, but you need to be happy and she decided to take redundancy. I instantly saw a weight lifted from her shoulders.

I believe the toughest decisions are the ones that make you happy, you may not see it instantly but eventually it will bring happiness and after all isn't that all we want to be? Happy in life.

I would love to know your thoughts.<

Agreed! I ended up leaving a well paid job at a big company in the city where I wasn’t particularly happy and took a big paycut to work in a small company in a sector I was much more interested in – am still there and met my husband there, so all worked out for the best! #TriumphantTales

Yes I totally agree that making those tough decisions and sticking to them can actually turn out to be the best thing you do, even if it doesn’t seem like it at the time. I’ve definitely been there before when I’ve taken a job I wasn’t too sure I was really ready for. I took the leap and it’s paid off. #triumphanttales

I think the hardest decisions are usually the most important, that’s why they are so hard. I made the decision to leave my job of 10 years after I had the Little Man. It was nerve wracking but I knew it was the right one. I’ve never looked back. Thanks for joining in with #TriumphantTales, hope to see you again Tuesday.

I’m facing tough decisions at the moment which currently involve me living in a different country from my husband to enable me to support our youngest child after leaving education. Hubby loves his job but is miserable in Dubai on his own, I’m miserable in Dubai, but equally miserable in the UK without hubby, but happy to be in the UK. I can’t support the teen in the UK without hubby working and if we move back to the UK, hubby won’t be working, I’ll have to get a job to support him but then won’t be able to support the teen. So this is this less of all the evils and we’ll review the situation at the end of the year. We’ve been through far worse, so we know it’ll all work out, it always does. Glad you and your wife have worked things out. #triumphanttales
