Taking A Moment and Reflecting On What I Created (Family)
Being a dad of five children I hope I don’t miss any part of their lives, but the reality is, I will. I am great believer in karma and that good will always overcome bad, and with me life could have dealt me a better deal, especially my childhood, but out of the bad came the most wonderful thing, my children.

I am an older dad than most and with that comes the stark reality that I might not see all of my children grow up and become what they want to be in life.
I often think that being an older dad is a little bit selfish because I may not be around to put things right for my children, sort out their problems, listen to their moans about life whether it be big or small. That bothers me a little, but there’s nothing I can do about it.
Slowly I am seeing my children settling down. My oldest has made the big jump in her life and is now living with her partner and they seem incredibly well suited and I truly believe it will work out nicely and my daughter J is the happiest she has been ever. She is happy in her work and I imagine in the next few years she will look to starting a family.
My second daughter is in university and it’s her second year and there is no doubt that she is maturing very quickly. She is studying child nursing and her recent placement on a neo-natal unit has, I believe changed her outlook on life. When you see that much emotion in one place I think it makes you think about yourself as well and it impacts on how you behave. Without question it will make her grow up.

My son A is now 17 and is doing his final year of A’levels. He hopes to go to university to study design and technology. He has a very clever mind and vision when designing something and I would be amazed if he doesn’t design something we all end up using.
Finally their are my four year twins R and M. They have started school full-time in the last few months and have finally started to settle and they will start to come on in leaps and bounds that I’m sure of. My biggest fear is as an older dad that I won’t get to see them grow up into adulthood and I have always said to my wife that if I’m gone find somebody to be their daddy. Unfortunately for me, not that I would know I would be a distance memory.

I have always considered myself blessed and very lucky to have five children after all for me that’s the reason we are here.
But you can’t stop time moving on and I guess I may or may not see all my children grow and find happiness. I’m sure they will, but from a totally selfish point I don’t to want miss anything.
I can only teach them what I have learned in life, not a lot I know, haha! Hopefully they will listen to some of my wisdom and use it in their lives.
I have a dream that one day I will sit down to Christmas dinner with all my children, and they may or may not have partners and there will hopefully be grandchildren as well and my wife the love of my life. We’ll all be there and I will look in silence and think this is what I did with with my life and I think that is special because there is nothing more special than family. It completes all of us, yes we would all like to be rich, but money that is all the money in the world could not buy that moment of contentment and satisfaction that I achieved something with my life.

I hope I live to a ripe old age to achieve the sweetest moment that life would or could ever offer me. FAMILY something I didn’t have as a child, but I have managed somehow to create and nurture and I have loved so very much as an adult.

I think we all have similiar thoughts about wanting to see our grandkids etc. I’m not the youngest dad, although forgive me for saying I am younger than you Nigel! That said, I think us older dads have something younger dads don’t: life experience. I think we have a lot of knowledge to pass on to our kids. That shouldn’t be ignored! Thanks for hosting #ThatFridayLinky

Wonderful post! You sound like such a great dad, having been reading your post over the last few weeks 🙂 As for being an older dad, I wouldn’t worry. Who knows you could go on a long while yet!! However, make the memories now and it’s those that your children will remember with fondness if you can’t be there for them when they are older! x

I think it’s so important to take a step back and reflect on what an amazing thing it is to produce life. When children are newborn, it’s an everyday thing to look and think. “Look what we made!” But as children get older and the normal daily slog continues, that feeling fades. Lovely piece of writing.
