The 3 Most Important Duties Of A Groom

July 18, 2018

When it comes to wedding planning, it’s usually the bride that takes the lead, often with the help of a wedding planner. Most of the decisions fall to her and as the groom, you might be left feeling a bit useless. But there are actually a lot of important decisions that you need to make and some that you and the bride will make together. These are the most important duties that fall to you as the groom.

Choosing The Groomsmen And Ushers

The first part of this decision will be made together. You and your bride need to decide together how many bridesmaids and groomsmen you want at the wedding. Consider the cost here because you’ll be paying for outfits etc. (we’ll come to that later). If you end up having loads of bridesmaids and groomsmen, the cost of the wedding will start to mount up. After you’ve decided on how many you’re going to have and the bride has chosen her bridesmaids, you have to start compiling a list of groomsmen. Your friends and family are the obvious choices but you should consider the bride’s family too. If she has any brothers, it’s traditional to choose them. You’ve got to be careful who you pick for the best man role as well because they’ll have a lot of duties themselves. You need somebody fun but also somebody responsible.

Picking Out Suits

You probably aren’t going to be asked for your advice on the dresses for the bride and her bridesmaids but it falls to you to find the suits for you and your groomsmen. She’ll be making an effort to look her best and you should do the same. Make sure that you’re getting high-quality mens’ wedding suits, not cheap ones. However, you should keep in mind the cost, especially if you’re having quite a lot of groomsmen. Get a decent suit but don’t go overboard on the price. One of the other problems you’ll have is coordinating the whole thing. If you’ve got people living out of town that’s going to make things harder. Start preparing with plenty of time so you can arrange a date when everybody is available.

Finding A Band Or DJ

The final choice is usually a joint one but it often falls to the groom to find the different options. A band is great but you’ve got a bit less freedom. A DJ can play whatever you ask for but a band is obviously limited to the songs they know. It all depends on what you and the bride want at the wedding. You could always have a band for a while and then a DJ later on. Some people try to save money by getting a friend with an iPod to DJ the wedding but that isn’t a good idea. People don’t realise that there’s more to it than just sticking a playlist on. The choice and order of the songs are important and if you have an amateur doing it, it’s not going to be good.

You’ve only got a couple of duties as a groom but they’re important ones so make sure that you get them right.
