OMG! Where Has The Last 23 Years Gone

July 18, 2018

My eldest daughter turned 23 years old at the beginning of July and I thought to myself, OMG! Where have the last 23 years gone? The years really do flash by in the blink of an eye.

For me it really only feels like yesterday that I would sit on the patio and count the stars with her on a summer’s night at sunset, and try to pass on some words of wisdom to her, although we have had this conservation on a few occasions recently about how when she was four years old she would sit with me on patio, she claims she can’t remember any of it!

So my pearls of wisdom about life were lost on her bad memory haha! Secretly I believe she heard it all and subconsciously took it all in and that’s why she is such a success now. That’s my belief and I’m not changing my mind!

Last week brought home a few realities to me that you shouldn’t miss a thing, and you should do your best to cram every single milestone into your memory and attend every special moment throughout their childhood, because believe me it will be gone and there is no chance of getting it back. I know what you are thinking, easier said than done, life is busy etc, and yes, sometimes it’s just never possible to attend a sports day. My answer to that is to make time, to organise yourself and make arrangements to make sure you are at their school play, sports day and whatever it maybe. I have learnt over the years your children remember you being there with a huge smile of pride on your face, and for that moment you have made their day, mum and dad came to watch me.

Last week my eldest daughter jetted out to Cyprus with her partner for their summer holiday. My son, who is 19 years old, brought home his girlfriend for us to meet and I might add it’s the first girl he has ever brought home for us to meet. My 20 year old daughter is coming to the end of her training as a nurse and will start work full-time in a month or so.

I remember the first day they started school, and when my mother used to say to me that it doesn’t seem like yesterday you started school, now I know what she meant. It’s exactly how I feel now.

Time stands still for no-one and I’m in genuine disbelief that my three older children are now fully grown adults making their way in the world. I think I hopefully crammed as much as I could into their childhood to give them and me wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.

I have always felt fortunate to have older children and six year old twins, it has made me more determined to not miss any of my six year old twin girls milestones or events they are involved with. Because experience has taught me you cannot get that moment or memory back.

Do you try to remember every little moment through your children’s childhood? I would love to hear.

I thought I would remember everything, but I don’t. Although the important memories are there. I suppose, as an older parent, I am more conscious of being present for as much as I can, and so so look forward more than backwards … and as both our kids are young teenagers now, there is plenty going on to occupy us!

If life were a video, I would rewind to my sons’ toddler years and play on repeat and fast foward the teen years! Those teen days were the most challenging. Shudder!

I’m so grateful I took lots of photos when mine were young. My memory isn’t as great as it was – it happens when you’re nearly 1/2 a century old. So lots of special occasions are in photo albums. Then there were a few years when it all went to digital and I stopped. I really regret that. When my kids return home these days I always try to ‘down tools’ and live in the moment. I don’t take photos because they put up enough with the blog – but now they are always taking selfies so their lives are still there for me to see! xx

Oh Nige I so agree. I think because I’m a teacher, I see children all day long, it makes me think about mine more if that makes sense. My daughter has just finished school and it seems only yesterday that she set off on her first day. Lovely post. #thatfridaylinky

It’s sad that these individual memories can fade, or in the case of small children not be remembered at all! But they all remain part of the overall tapestry of childhood, weaving together the love between you and your child. I reckon you’re a pretty lucky guy to be able to experience being a dad to older and younger kids at the same time. #ThatFridayLinky

My eldest is 15 soon and the youngest turns 8 in a few days – and I can’t believe where those years have gone. But, I’ve been there for every key moment and will continue to be. I have never missed a school play, sports day or class assembly. I am there at their dance watching weeks and I am there when they perform in pantomimes and musicals. You are spot on – you CANNOT get this time back. Over the last 15 years, I’ve had rows with employers who fail to realise, that parents only have school-age children for a finite time. I’m lucky in that I have had a management position since our first daughter was born and I have stuck to my guns to be there for them. In the end, the employer has understood. Yes, I’ve used holiday, flexitime, unpaid leave – you name it and I’ve worked out a way. You have to. You CANNOT GET THIS TIME BACK.

Well one good thing about having the twins, is you get to go through all those milestone moments a second time … it’s like Disney, keeping the magic alive! #ThatFridayLinky

Lovely reflective post. Memory making is all that matters in the end and this week for perhaps obvious reason I have spent more time forging powerful memories with my children #ThatFridayLinky

It is crazy how quick time flies by and I’m sure the older I get the faster the time seems to pass! My oldest is 20 and has moved into her own home with her boyfriend and it doesn’t seem like that long ago I was bringing her home from the hospital! I definitely agree that we need to make as many memories with our kids as possible before its too late! #ThatFridayLinky

Every single moment! I engrave it in my brain! I think it comes with being an older parent. I didn’t become a mom until my mid thirties when I was already aware of the tricks time plays. #ThatFridayLinky

One of the great things about our blogs is that we will always have these thoughts to return to as they get older. pretty cool

I hope that we remember all the little things. I try taking lots of photos and printing them and having memory books and things. It is important to be there as much as you can – now my oldest is about to go t school I’m excited at the thought of sports days and plays! #ThatFridayLinky

My tot is only 2 and half at the moment, so remember most of it. But it does make me a little sad to know we won’t remember all this time we have together when he’s older #thatfridaylinky

Your family is beautiful. Yes time flies so fast. I wish I could freeze it a little while longer – or at least press the pause button x #ThatFridayLinky
