The 4 Essential Tools That Every Seamstress Should Have

November 4, 2021

Although sewing is a fantastic hobby that is relaxing and rewarding, it goes far beyond being just that. It is also a way to be more sustainable and be in control of your household. When you learn to sew you are able to make clothes and even repair the ones that you have to save them from going into a landfill.

It’s a skill that is very necessary so it pays off to learn it inside and out. Being able to fully enjoy it and do it well involves having the right tools. When you have the right tools then it is easier, faster, and more enjoyable to sew. In this article, we will go over what those tools are for a beginner to have.

1 – The sewing machine

Hand sewing is a thing and something that is relaxing while also working very well to repair and make clothing. However, most people will want a sewing machine to make the work faster and more accurate.

There are a lot of different kinds and they all do different things. There are mechanical sewing machines, as well as sergers and even computerised models. To understand which kind to get, you have to think about what type of sewing you plan to do.

If you are repairing clothes and need very sturdy hems, then a serger sewing machine is a good option as it does the best stitches to hold pieces of cloth together. A computerised one is a bit complicated and has a learning curve yet is essential for doing complicated embroidery

As a beginner, a traditional mechanical one will give you enough stitches to keep you busy with projects for the foreseeable future.

2 – Rotary cutting set

A rotary cutting set is going to make your life much easier when you have one. When cutting out patterns it is indispensable. Scissors are great and you should definitely have a good pair, but they can be somewhat limiting when you need to make precise patterns.

Not only that but when doing many of the same patterns a rotary is the way to go. You can usually cut through about six layers at the same time with precision. This isn’t something that can be done with scissors.

3 – Seam ripper

It’s a very basic tool but a seam ripper is needed to be able to repair clothing easily and quickly. You’ll also need it to be able to remove any mistakes you’ve made so you can start over. Yes, you will definitely be needing these then since mistakes are part of the game no matter how much experience you have!

4 – Fabric pencil

Getting your pattern onto the fabric is only done with a fabric pencil. They will help you to make the clothes you want with ease. And the marks are water-soluble so after your work is done you won’t see the lines at all. A white one is going to be used the most but make sure to have something for when the fabric is white.
