Things I wish I had been told before having children

July 2, 2015

1. I miss sleep more than I ever could imagine! The early mornings, broken nights sleeps, the actual act of getting them to bed etc. Sleep deprivation is something I know all too well! I never believed it was possible, but it’s true!

2. I used to be a patient, laid back and easy going person before I had children, but when my kids came along I knew that my patience would be tested! In fact it’s been taken to a whole new level! Counting to ten helps!

3. Spontaneity – what’s that?! Suddenly the ability to go to the cinema at a moments notice had disappeared! Going out for a last minute meal was also a thing of the past!

4. I know now how to bribe toddlers! It’s an art form I’m pleased to have mastered pretty well! I can convince them to do what I want and there are no lengths that I won’t go to just to get out of the house with them!

5. Food. The simplest thing in the world is eating, but all of a sudden I’m faced with the fussiness of toddler twins. One day they’ll eat a particular meal and finish it, two days later you serve up the same meal and they won’t touch it!
6. This point kind of links in with the spontaneity point I made above! Getting to go out anywhere takes so long and a number of tactics have to be employed just to get the little ones to put their shoes and coats on before the hassle of getting them out of the door begins! Where have the days gone where you just put on your shoes and coat and shut the door? It amazes me all the rituals children put you though!

7. I’ve discovered that three year old twins are smarter than me as I simply have no idea how to negotiate with them! The twins always win!
8. The love that I feel for all of my children is undescribable. It’s an awesome, unconditional love. It’s something I have always found impossible to describe, but I feel it every waking moment.

9. I knew that I’d feel protective of my children, but I never realised just how strong that feeling would be. Not just to ensure that no physical harm happens to my children, but also I feel protective that nobody hurts my children emotionally.
10. My children complete me and that’s the strangest thing of all. I never thought that I would feel like that, but all of my children make me complete. They give me a purpose in life and all the love, laughter and joy that I feel every day makes my life very special every single day.

It's amazing how much children change lives, and in ways no one can imagine until they have them, I remember people say "you just don't understand until you have kids" and thinking what rubbish it was until I had them and realised how right those people were.

Great post! I can relate to all of these – especially negotiating…unless I have chocolate, I'm basically not going to win! Thanks for linking up to #TheList xx

It's incredible how your life just gets flipped upside down with kids. I love the know how to bribe them line haha. They come with so much stress and tiredness. You lose who you once were. But it's amazing how much joy they bring too and the special bond that you'll have for life is precious. x

Our children do give us so much and also drive us to distraction. It is only something you can really know when you have them yourself. I love hearing and being able to share that with other parents. 'They give me a purpose in life and all the love, laughter and joy that I feel every day makes my life very special' rings so true, as do your other points. #binkylinky

Toddlers will always win the negotiations – they have nothing to lose lol. Thanks for hosting the #binkylinky

agree with Ashley. It's an impossible thing to describe to somebody that doesn't have children

Another great post and I love the piccy. I have to count to 10 A LOT too and the sleep thing….wow! Miss it loads. However, you are also right…the amazing bond you have with them and the urge to protect them is one I would never change xxx #binkylinky

Being a parent is both the best and worst of times! Your list is pretty much the same spot as mine. Loved the photos. Hope you had a great holiday

So true! And the food point I can totally relate to – my two are so fussy with their food and is very annoyingly! And the spontaneity, if only we could just pop out lol #binkylinky x

This is a lovely post and it made me smile.
As a new parent I especially miss spontaneity. Every outing is planned like a military operation. Oh to be able to decide to go out for dinner tonight on a whim. Never mind… in 18 years time we can do it all over again!

I love this post! I can relate to all of your points! The fussy eating is something we're struggling with at the moment. How do you cope with it?! Oh and spontaneity & sleep – I so miss these!
