When deciding on have an extension to your home there are many things you need to do. For starters you need to have a clear plan of exactly what you want your extension to achieve.

Here are a few tips that I think are useful, and also some very important things that should be kept in mind during the planning stages. If you have a vision of exactly how it should look once it’s finished, that’s great, but keep yourself open to change because sadly your vision might not always be possible.
1. Finding An Architect
The first thing to do is find yourself a good architect. This is really important, and it’s the best way to try to find somebody that can put your idea into practice. I would say that it’s important if you can to get an architect who is recommended to you so that you know what their work is like and that they’re reliable, and up for the job.
2. Planning Permission
Once the design of your extension is finalised make sure that all of the right planning permission is obtained from your local council. Once that’s done you can move onto the next step.
3. Finding A Builder
This can be a nightmare, and I would highly recommend that you get a few builders to quote the job. It’s also important to note that the cheapest quote is not necessarily the best one. If you can get a quality construction company such as HouseUP recommended to you then that is a huge bonus. If you can take a look at their previous work, even better!
Once those three important steps are taken you can move onto the actual building of your extension. If you’ve decided on a single story extension to the rear of your property with a roof, remember that light will be reduced to your original back room. A great way around this is to install cheap roof lanterns. Not only do they look very stylish, they will also give lots of light to the original back room.
I would also say if you are just doing the single story extension, pay extra for the work needed so that if you want to increase it to a two storey extension one day, it will be a lot less hassle in the future.
Finally remember that you are building your extension for the benefit of your family so make sure that you think and plan everything carefully.
