Too much or too little television. What’s right?
I am going to start by saying that in our home the TV goes on at about 7am and doesn’t go off until we go to bed at night. Unless of course we go out. Right or wrong? That’s the way it is in our home.
I grew up with no restrictions on how much television I was allowed to watch so I guess that’s been passed on to my children. I don’t have to put any restrictions on how much television they watch.
I really don’t understand why television should be limited to children. What developments does it stop? There are numerous reports about a child’s development being affected, but no concrete proof as far as I can see. Usually they use that line that it’s been linked to something or other. I have always struggled to understand what that means.
What I believe is important is the type of programmes that your child watches which I believe can have a huge beneficial effect on them learning their ABC or counting along to their favourite characters surely this will encourage them to develop.
It doesn’t affect how we are as a family. Talking, having conversations, telling each other about our day etc. The twins will often stop watching television and talk to us about something completely different or they could ask us something about what they are watching. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with that.
Our twins watch television on a very regular basis, but they only tend to watch programmes that appeal to them or characters they like so to my way of thinking what’s wrong with that? Let’s be honest do we as adults put a limit on how much television we are allowed to watch? Of course we don’t. So why are we limiting what our children to watch television? Surely it’s about being sensible. Don’t let your children watch rubbish and don’t leave adult shows like the Jeremy Kyle show on in the background because that would most certainly disturb them! Actually that rubbish really disturbs me!
This is the 21st century television, the Internet and television are big parts of their lives so we should be embracing all of this. I’m not saying you can only see certain amounts of television.
Children’s television today is entertaining, educational, informative and teaches children so many things and the benefits certaintly outweighs any negatives. Actually I find it difficult to find many negatives. It has never reduced my ability to have social interaction with other people. Infact how often have you had a conversation about a particular show you have seen the night before so it’s a topic of conversation.

Our almost 3 yr old has Paw Patrol when she gets home from nursery as it allows her to relax after a busy day of playing. Apart from that we don’t have the TV on for her and she doesn’t whine for it. Comes in quite useful then as a treat for good behaviour.
Having said that we’re not militant about not giving her TV. Just have never really actively used it with her so she doesn’t mind not having too much of it.
