Top 5 tips for taking toddlers on a plane

June 29, 2016

We are soon going to be going on holiday abroad. This will be the third time in four years that our twin girls have flown which is amazing considering they are only four years old! There is no question that they are very lucky. I was about 13 years old before I went on a plane. So they are doing quite well and I learnt so much from taking young children on a plane journey. Saying that here are my tips for an uneventable journey.

1. Our flight this year is 6am which means the girls will be woken about 3am to get to the airport two hours before as required to check-in. The girls are going to be excited, but also tired. So that we can get to the airport as smoothly as possible we will making sure everything is packed and ready the day before.
We will also make sandwiches and snacks the day before and have drinks ready. Not only is this easier it’s cheaper than airport restaurants.

2. Before you arrive at the airport make sure you have checked in online. This will save loads of time once you are checking. This year the girls have Trunki suitcases so hopefully they will use them to sit down while mummy and daddy sort everything out. There’s nothing worse than the check-in process whilst holding a child and trying to pass over your documents.

3. It’s important to have plenty of things to occupy the children while waiting for the plane to take off. Leap pad are great as well as puzzles and games.
4. With us it’s an early start so if possible if you can and I know everybody is buzzing with excitement because after all we are going on holidays! Encouraging your young children to have a little sleep on the plane is a good idea so you can make the most of the first day of your holiday. It will be difficult, but 100% worth it!

5. The most important tip for me is to stay calm and cool because the kids will be excited, but quite possibly grumpy due to the lack of sleep. How you react in these first few hours will set the mood for your holiday so try to get it to off to an exciting and enjoyable time.

So those are my tips for taking small children on a plane I’m sure there are loads more.

If you have any tips I would love to hear about them.

Great tips. We also have the Trunki for my oldest. My youngest can't walk yet at 17 months so wouldn't have the balance to sit on it but she will be in the buggy anyway. I am collecting things for Matthew's Trunki for the entertainment on board. #thelist

This is so valuable to me right now, we are away to Greece end of next week and I am so scared I'm going to forget something important like checking in online. I need to write this down and remind myself next thursday so it's done! Thanks for the tips, Nige. Thanks for linking up to #thelist x
