We Live In A Diverse Society Where Is The Problem?

So here we are in 2019 and sadly to my dismay we are living with bigoted, narrow minded people that for reasons beyond my belief won’t accept that people can live their lives exactly as they want. Unfortunately we are not talking about a minority of the population. It’s inherited teaching from a generation that still believes that a family should consist only of a mum, dad and children who of course couldn’t possibly grow up to be anything but exactly the same as their bigoted, narrow minded parents. It’s a great shame to me that we as a society are perpetuating this kind of attitude in 2019.

There are of course many reasons why people simply don’t accept same sex families or inter-racial relationships and for me the biggest problem people have with this is fear. They fear change and they fear what is unknown to them.

The truth is being gay or transgender is not a choice. It’s how somebody is born. Exactly the same way as somebody is born heterosexual. I’m a heterosexual man and I simply couldn’t be gay because I was born that way and the same applies to gay people or transgender people. They were born that way and we need to as a society to respect that people are all different and there is nothing wrong with that. Let’s embrace our awesome diverse society. It’s something we should be proud of.

Nowadays I see on a regular basis more and more same sex couples adopting children and they will receive some appalling abuse online which is unforgivable and totally unnecessary. We need to look beyond who the parents are and give them the utmost respect for adopting children who have unfortunately not had the best start in life. They are giving these children a chance to have a normal childhood within a loving family environment. After all we would shout it from the rooftops if a man and woman couple adopted a child. We’d heap praise upon them, but when a same sex couple do it there is still this attitude of oh, well that’s a bit strange.

Questions such as where’s mum or where’s dad? How incredibly disrespectful and what utter nonsense. It’s totally normal and actually refreshing that adoption agency’s are giving same sex couples the same opportunities that any other couple would receive so where is the problem with people finding an issue with same sex couples adopting and becoming parents?

There is another important factor in todays world that plays a huge part in this very unnecessary discrimination and that is religion. Many religious beliefs are quite simply outdated and need to drag themselves into the 21st century and realise that a family is made up of all different ways, but I’m not holding my breath that they will. After all they have had hundreds of years to change and they are nowhere nearer to doing it. I will say even though I don’t agree with many of these outdated beliefs they do have a right to their opinions even if they are in my humble opinion very misjudged and belong in the dark ages.

We can change society to be more tolerant and respectful of everybody’s choices, but it will take time and we should start by teaching our children that family is family no matter how the dynamics of that family is made up. If that means teaching our children in school from the age of five about relationships and how relationships are and can be different then I for one am all for it. Of course as long as it is age appropriate teaching.

By teaching our children at a young age this in turn will make a difference of how society will approach the changing world that our children are growing up in. It will make it a happier world for us all.
