It’s a bit of a crazy thing to write, let alone live through. One day your children are going to stop being children and are going to grow into adults. Whilst your role as their parent will never be over, it is going to dramatically change.
Thankfully this is a gradual thing, from 12 to 20 they develop and you learn to adapt to their independence and strong mindedness. There still comes one moment though, that will stand out against all others, where you realise, you’ve given them all you can and now? It’s up to them. They will create their own path, hopefully looking to you for guidance, but generally looking back a lot less.
It’s an amazing feeling, when you realise you aren’t just their parent, you are their friend too and is a perfect time to make the most of this new bond.
It’s hard to imagine sharing your first pint in the pub, or heading out for your first drive together, when you aren’t behind the wheel, but the day will come where you can sit and plan an adventure together, where you are both equally responsible and possibly, out of your comfort zone.
One thing a lot of Dads dream about, is heading off on the open road for the road trip of a lifetime, but with you having the edge over your, now considerably taller, child, perhaps it’s worth considering twisting it up a little.
Picture this, the two of you learning something new. Getting your bike licence and embarking on an adventure where you are both learning, both discovering every single minute of this trip.
If this is might it be a subject of interest to you and your new adult (child) then get planning and make that bond even closer. It’s not as difficult as it might sound. First you are going to need to check your licence details to see if you require a separate test to legally ride a motorcycle. Even if you don’t it is worth heading off as a duo to take some lessons together as making this part of the process is fun. You don’t need to rush off and buy some bikes. Providing you have the right kit, there are companies who specialise in bike hire for adventures, in fact they even have pre planned routes and support for your trip which may be the best option for your first road trip together, it will give you peace of mind whilst you are finding your balance and sharpening your skills.
You can look at superbike trips which take you on the best roads for speed or if you really want to test yourself, there are adventure off road trips that will test your strength and stamina. Forcing you to work as a team and taking you to some of the most amazing locations on earth.
Don’t be sad when you realise your children have grown up into adults, relish the start of a new relationship with them and seal that with a memory that will last you both a lifetime.

Wonderful post, Nige. It’s something way off in the future for us, but I have done much the same with my nephews. It really reinforces the bond. Love it!
