You Tube Kids App Launch Review

November 25, 2015

I grew up without the internet so when it arrived I embraced it with open arms. It’s an amazing invention!

I can remember getting my my first desktop computer. It was massive, slow and you’d be lucky if you managed to get a stable connection because it constantly cut off meaning you’d have to start all over again!

I am a dad of five children and none of them have a memory of life without the internet! Therefore having a dedicated app just for kids is truly an innovation. Sometimes when you search for something on You Tube you don’t always get what you want so the new You Tube Kids App is the perfect solution.

The young children of today are so very lucky that the technology of today is moving so fast and there is so much for them to interact with.

Last Sunday we were invited to London zoo to attend the launch of You Tube’s new Kids App in the UK.

You Tube is name that everybody knows and the majority of the population uses it. Whether it’s to watch the latest pop video or to follow a tutorial on how to do something.

The You Tube Kids App is brilliant. It is perfect for our three year old twins and I can see that a lot of thought has gone into how to make it just right for children. It’s safe and allows parents to feel comfortable whilst their children are using it. Initially it was released in Amercia and already it has been downloaded 10 million times by families!

Some key features of the app are:

• It has a bright and playful design large images and bold icons which for our three year old twins is perfect as they find it easy to pick what they want to do and manage it all on there own.

• The App is all about family and the content is all about your children’s learning and making them curious. The Kids App has many of Childerns favourites such as Thomas The Tank,Octonauts and kids National geographic. So plenty for everyone.

• One feature I particularly like is the parental controls which includes a timer so you can limit how long your children use it. You can also control the search options which is excellent keeping to a limit what your children search for.

• You can also watch You Tube Kids App on the big screen as a family by using a chromecast or a games console. Making it a very good family activity.

Launch Party at London Zoo

On arrival we were directed to park our car and then walked to London zoo. On entering I was a little in awe at all the You Tube Kids posters and all the people from You Tube who were there to help us.

We went up upstairs to the launch and it was amazing! You Tube really had put on a fantastic launch. There was a bus where the girls could sing along to some of their favourite tunes.

There was an Octonauts ball pit and Captain Barnacles was there to get the children involved in helping him out with his missions. We also saw Postman Pat who came along to see all of the children and have their picture taken with him.

The controller from Thomas the Tank was there with lots of Thomas the Tank toys to play with.

There were also tablets dotted around where our twins girls got the chance to play on the You Tube Kids App.

At different intervals some very cool animals were brought up for the children to look at including an armadillo and some meerkats.

We also had our family photo taken in a big screen which was very cool.

Lunch was all supplied and it was delicious. The girls were very fortunate to have a You Tube rucksack and lunch box given to them which was full of goodies, plus my wife and I both had a gift to go home with too.

The You Tubes Kids App is fantastic. As mentioned above a lot of thought has gone into it to make it very child friendly. It worked wonders on our drive back to Cardiff because we didn’t want the girls to go to sleep so we gave them our phones with the app on. They loved it so much, that they watched it for the whole two and a hour drive home!

The You Tube Kids App is available to download free from Google Play or from the iTunes App Store

I filmed some of the event whilst we were there (on my new Go Pro!) and have put a short video together which you can watch below!

This is a great app! You will now your children are only watching appropriate videos and they will feel a bit more in control of what they can see. I remember the days when the internet was all dial up and no one could use the landline if someone was online! How it has all changed! Thanks for hosting the #binkylinky
