Your Children’s Health
One the biggest worries and fears that I have as a parent is my children’s health. If I am really honest with myself, one of the most testing times as a parent is when one of my children is unwell.
After being a dad for 22 years you would think that I’d have got used to it, but even now when either my son or daughter phone or text me from university to say they have been to the doctors and been given antibiotics, I instantly worry and think that I wish I was next to them to give them a hug and generally look after them to help them feel better. Sadly you can’t, but at least you are there on the end of the phone to talk and listen to them.
The scariest times are when your children are little or babies. It’s particularly frightening when they are babies and they can’t tell you exactly what is wrong, and you have to rely on doctors to get the diagnosis right. When one of my six year old twins was very unwell with constant vomiting and generally very tired with a high fever at the age of three, this was a very anxious time. Thankfully she was admitted to hospital and she received the treatment required to help her back to a full recovery, but it doesn’t mean that you will feel useless and inadequate as it’s very difficult times for everybody.
It’s also a worry with just minor health issues and one particular time was when my now 20 year old was just six years old. She used to get a rash that would irritate and cause her to keep scratching. We decided that we needed to visit the doctors and the doctors diagnosed a skin condition called eczema. I have to admit I heard of eczema, but didn’t quite know what it was. My first question was, can we get help with eczema, thankfully there was help and the doctor prescribed a cream to help the condition almost instantly.
When it comes to my children they have been lucky to not have any life threatening or serious illnesses, but it doesn’t stop you worrying, when for instance, my eldest daughter developed asthma as a child. Here is a very useful infographic showing what happens to your body during an asthma attack.
When you become a parent nobody tells you that you will have years of worry when it comes to your children’s health.
Do you worry about your children’s health all the time? I know I do. I would love hear.
