My Parenting Mistakes OMG! There Are So Many
Being a parent, at the best of times is incredibly hard. Nothing is easy about it. It’s like no other job in the world. There is no training and so often no guidance, so it’s no surprise that people can be overcome with this 24/7 job that you have embarked upon. The biggest problem with being a mum or dad is that you never really know what your children are going to do next, which of course so often makes you look like you have made yet another mistake as a parent.

A while ago I read a brilliant post by Tom who blogs at Diary of the Dad. It was called, My Top 10 Parenting Fails. It got me thinking about how many fails or mistakes I have made as a dad. Actually, I lost count a long time ago. So here are a selection of my fails and mistakes I have made as a dad.
One moment that springs to my mind instantly when I think of mistakes I have made as a parent, happened when my twin girls were about six months old. My wife was having a lie-in on this particular morning, so I was parenting on my own, and I managed to bang one of my twin girls head on the radiator behind the sofa. She also had a sticky eye so I went and got the solution for washing her eyes, but what I thought was the eye solution was actually Milton sterilisation solution. It wasn’t until later when I asked my wife what it was that I realised why my baby daughter was not happy when I was bathing her eyes. It took me 6 months to tell my wife what I had done that day!

On another occasion my other twin girl was very poorly and vomiting almost every half an hour. We left it thinking she would eventually get better. Needless to say she didn’t get any better and our decision to leave her, left her being hospitalised for four days with a serious infection that needed anti-biotics via an IV. It taught me to never put something off, and to act quickly next time, especially when it comes to health, because children deteriorate very quickly. Thankfully she recovered well.
My final moment happened when we were on holiday at a Haven camp. The twins were about two years old and we were in the arcade area. I was trying to get change for the girls to play on the penny machines, which happened to be not working properly. I knew my daughter, R, was next to me, but I was focused on sorting out the change that I didn’t realise she had walked off. She was following a couple out of the complex obviously thinking it was me and her mum. For that split second, I totally panicked because I couldn’t see her instantly. It was a gut wrenching moment, but thankfully I spotted her quick enough and scooped her up in my arms, but in today’s world you just never know, and this was a very busy place.
Being a parent is wonderful and something I consider that I had a calling to do, be a dad, but it so often has moments of failures and mistakes, because being a dad is a learning curve that you never quite reach the end of.

I have learnt after 22 years of being a dad and having five children to never beat yourself up for an error of judgment or mistake. I learnt from them, and never repeated the same mistake again. I usually make completely different mistakes instead, haha!
Parenting is very difficult! Who would choose it as job? Would you?

That moment when you lose your child in a crowded public place… oh my goodness is there anything worse! I agree parenting is difficult, I don’t know why I agreed to go again. Any tips for how to juggle 3? #ThatFridayLinky

I’ve made so many mistakes like this and usually do beat myself up awfully for it but I have to admit since blogging and reading posts like this I am beating myself up less for it. Accidents happen and we definitely learn from them! #ThatFridayLinky

I wouldn’t call them mistakes – I’d call them learning experiences. There’s no handbook with kids and frankly, I am glad. We all carve our own path on the parenting journey and learn along the way.

I’ll never forget losing Ella in Primark when she was little. I was half panicked and half didn’t want to lose my place in the queue! Luckily I spotted her hiding under some clothes!! #thatfridaylinky

Mistakes? Learning experiences? Whatever you call them, you certainly made me laugh this morning, especially with the Milton fluid eye-bath!

I hear you! There are so many mistakes we make aren’t there? I mean, no one gives you a “how to parent” book or tell you how to cope with these things do they? 🙂

You can’t help but make mistakes along the way, as long as they’re not too drastic and result in something really bad. The main thing is to learn from them. I’m always learning from having Isabelle. Only the other day I cocked up and realised it’s not a great idea to do a 4 mile walk when it’s -3 out and I don’t have any milk. Bad idea. She cried a lot and I learned my lesson.

I tend to go with the maxim that we learn an awful lot though mistakes.

I’m surprised you can remember those first months at all. I’m sure I made plenty of mistakes in that time, but I honestly remember very little of their first 6 or so months.

Every day is a school day – that’s my motto. Always a learning curve, after all, they don’t come with a manual!! #ThatFridayLinky

Beings parent is the hardest job in the world as well as being the most rewarding. There’s no handbook to being a parent so ‘mistakes’ are just parents learning. Lovely post, lovely kids! #thatfridaylinky

It is not easy. My little one fell out of a chair and bonked her head. It took me forever to get over it!! #thatfridaylinky

Oh I also lost Eva at a Haven in the arcade! I bent down to take something from the pram for Harry and looked up and she had gone. Unfortunately she had ran quite fast and it took 15 agonising minutes to find her. I genuinely believed she was gone in those moments, and every time I think about it I feel sick to my stomach. I think we all make mistakes, it’s what makes us human! #thatfridaylinky

Mistakes are what makes us who we are today. It’s not easy and it’s not glamourous, but I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. Thanks for sharing your mistakes so we#ThatFridayLinky

I could pick so many — but I suppose the ultimate is losing my daughter for 20 minutes in Eurodisney. It happened in the blink of an eye and while I searched frantically all around, my wife appealed to various people, and you can imagine our relief when a kindly Spanish man in his 30s walked over to my wife with a chirpy little seven-year-old by the hand. THE RELIEF!!! #ThatFridayLinky

Oh My I was going to berate you for focusing on the fails but your last comments redeem you 🙂 Parenting is never easy and everyone makes mistakes, but instead of focusing on them, think about all the marvellous things you’ve done as a parent 🙂

Thanks for the mention! Yes, quite right, parenting is a learning curve and we all make mistakes. It’s important that we do as well because we learn from them. Well, most of the time anyway. I still need to stop making my kids laugh near bedtime – I always end up paying for that!

Not mistakes…teachable moments…parenting accomplishments. And it looks like you learned your lesson every time and were a better Dad for it!

We all have our share of these moments, that is certain. Being a parent is the hardest and most wonderful thing rolled into one. I wouldn’t have ever known, nor would I ever change a thing. I am so privileged to be a mommy! #ThatFridayLinky
