6 Things Every New Parent Should Learn

March 28, 2017

Bringing a child into the world is a wondrous occasion – but that doesn’t mean it’s totally stress-free. New lessons are learned everyday as a parent, with some proving to be crucial to the development of your little one. Today, let’s take a look at six things every new parent should learn.

1. Sleep will be less peaceful

Sleeping is, for a lot of people anyway, one of the most sacrosanct parts of life. Disturb a dozer at your peril. However, if you’ve just brought a new-born into the world, prepare for at least a few months without a regular, peaceful, pattern of sleep.

There are suggested methods for how to get your baby to sleep through the night available online, but the best bet is to continue with your dis-organised routine until something clicks and they eventually start to maintain a regular and relaxed pattern. Just be prepared to tough it out during the initial stages.

2. Accidents happen

We like to convince ourselves nothing could possibly go wrong with our little one’s health, but, sadly, it’s impossible to keep them completely safe at all times. While you can certainly take steps to childproof your home, it doesn’t mean they won’t get a few bumps and scratches at some point.

So long as you’re wary, the accidents which occur won’t be anything disastrous. All kids fall over and cut themselves. A key lesson to learn comes from accepting there might come a day when they do rough themselves up a bit. This is a natural part of growing and not something to be horrendously feared.

3. Don’t stock up too much

While it’s good to work on a month-by-month basis when it comes to products, clothes and your baby’s accessories, it’s not wise to go crazy and stock up on these sorts of things for months in advance.

Babies grow at an exceptionally fast rate, so there’s a good chance you could find the clothes you bought just a couple of months prior no longer fit – and, as a result, were a waste of money. Be patient and only get clothes and nappies when you absolutely have to.

4. Technology is your friend

The modern age has brought with it some serious advancements when it comes to day-to-day childcare. Mothers and fathers can google queries at any time of the day or night, while specialist apps have been set up to make things as simple as possible.

Creations like My Family App will allow you to track all sorts of factors about your child’s development, from how often their nappy is being changed to the last time you fed them. Devices like this make the child-raising process easier than in any other generation. That doesn’t mean it’ll be a doddle, however.

5. Baths aren’t a daily necessity

Keeping clean is obviously important, but you don’t have to worry about the stress of running a bath for your baby on a daily basis. Their skin is too sensitive to have too many washes, so three to four baths a week are enough.

Try using a sponge to clean them when you are washing too, as this is the least likely to cause irritation or sores on their body. Obviously make sure to clean the nappy areas as regularly as possible, however.

6. You will make mistakes

Nobody is perfect. Making mistakes is what being a parent is all about. We’d all like to believe we’ll head into our first childcare duties and flawlessly pull it off, but errors are bound to happen. You’re on a learning curve that, if we’re honest, will never truly end. Accept that and you’ll be far more content.

Have these lessons made you feel less stressed about becoming a new parent? It’s not easy to raise a child, but if you bare these factors in mind you’ll do just fine.
