A Feature Wall Is A Must Have In Every Home

I have always considered myself a bit different when it comes to decorating in my home. This most likely comes from doing my job as a painter and decorator, which I’ve been doing for the last 20 years.

I have so often seen people play it safe when decorating their homes because they worry too much about not liking the end result.

Quite often my advice is to be brave, take a risk, show your personality and character, and don’t follow trends or fads.

One of the ways that you can show all of the personality and character that you know is simply bursting out of you, is to have a feature wall in your most used room. This will most likely be your living room  where everybody in the family gathers to either watch tv or simply just chat about their days.

For me personally I would want something that is bold, but also that has an oldly worldly feel about it. The best place to start looking for ideas is online. Browse the internet, search social media sites such as Pinterest for ideas and have a look at what is available. You may well be shocked at the huge range of ideas out there.

As I have already said, we like the old fashioned look that includes lots of wood. This includes sofas with an element of wood involved. I particularly like stained wood rather than painted wood, so looking for a feature wall that suits our current tastes is important.

The wall that I have decided to choose as our feature wall is the fireplace wall. This is currently a gas fire with a wood surround and plinth finished in rich mahogany. I’m looking for something that not only compliments our choice of decoration and furniture, but is also a little bit different that can give you the wow factor when family and friends visit.

While browsing the internet I came across a website called UK feature walls. They had exactly what I was looking for, in particular brick slips. I bet you are all wondering what they are? Well, they are also known as brick tiles.

They look absolutely awesome and as I said I was looking for a rustic look, and they look exactly like brick tiles to give the feel of authenticity. They also come in so many different designs, so I will have no trouble picking one out to suit our room. I also noticed that these can be used outside, so I could well be looking at them again to add a very different look to our patio area.

I have three tips when deciding to have a feature wall in your home.

1. Be Brave

When deciding on a room you would like to have a feature wall in, remember you want it stand out, hence the name ‘feature’. So don’t be frightened to go for a bold look.

2. Deciding on the which room

This is very important for lots of reasons, but a very important reason is to pick a room that is large enough to have a bold feature wall. Picking a narrow room will make iy feel that the feature wall is on top of you. Always make sure the room is wide enough to incorporate a feature wall.

3. Pick something that suits your decoration and furniture

This is a vital decision. There is no point painting a wall in a colour that although may stand out and be bold, but doesn’t contrast well with your furniture or decoration. Look around your room carefully and decide what is best suited.
