Bloggers, Vloggers, Instagrammers etc. Are they the Celebs of the 21st Century?
When I was growing up social media, and in fact the internet did not exist, it was still in fact not even thought of. So celebrities for me growing up were pop stars, TV or film stars, which would occasionally would be seen on TV, and every now and again you would get an opportunity to see your favourite pop stars in concert. For me most of these pop stars were put on a pedestal because news of them was sparse and so consequently you never heard anything bad they may have done, so they would be people you aspire to be. You would look up to them and they were simply your hero or heroine.
Fast forward to the present day and how the world has changed with the information highway in overdrive moving so fast it’s hard to keep up.
It all got me thinking about how our children now see celebrities. Who do they look up to? Are their heroes vloggers, bloggers or people who have these massive followings on instagram?
The question I ask myself is do the social media celebrities have any longevity or are they here today (make a fortune) and gone tomorrow? Or as the saying goes, flavour of the day. When I was growing up many pop stars, in particular were one hit wonders, but also many and I mean a lot of pop stars of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s have shown longevity with new audiences listening to them and the youth of today wanting to see them in concert or downloading their latest song.
How many top You Tube stars will still be here in a year or so? Some will survive, but the vast majority will disappear without a trace. Bloggers are no different. You will have your moment at the top possibly, but you need to keep evolving and also lead the field with new ideas and thought provoking ideas for posts. I find it comparable to a pop star that needs to keep producing hit song after hit song, not many have achieved that over recent years.
I personally think we are living a world of disposable celebrities. Some will achieve massive fame and fortune, but there is a queue forming behind them waiting to take their place, and there is no doubt they do very quickly.
The world that we live in of the internet and social media produces celebrities, but I think they have a very short shelf life.
Will the world ever see the likes of Elvis Presley, The Beatles or Michael Jackson again? Somehow I just don’t think so. The celebrity world is overcrowded and even with little or no talent you can be a celebrity.

This is a really tough one for me. I don’t like the fact that far too many talentless and quite frankly useless people are able to become a celebrity and with that financially stable for the rest of their lives so easily.
However, I do like the amount of opportunities our current world offers up for people to make something of themselves. I wrote about a similar topic a couple of weeks ago saying how excited I am for my children’s future that the world we live in today gives everyone a more even chance to make something of themselves.
I think the changes that need to be made are more towards algorithms and the type of content places such as Facebook and YouTube promote in the trending sections.
I don’t think it’s necessarily social media alone either. There were shows on normal TV long before social media was such a force that put people on the front pages of the newspapers etc for being dumb and good looking alone.
