Breaking up the boredom of the summer holidays
The school summer holidays have now started and as a part-time stay at home dad, I was beginning to think about what I can do to make sure my four year old twin girls don’t get bored when I’m on duty on a Monday and Tuesday. I know I could go away on my own for six weeks – sounds like a plan!, but I wouldn’t get away with it! Never mind, it was a nice idea!
Now down to the serious issue of keeping the twins entertained this summer and of course this being the UK, the weather can be unpredictable so planning on entertaining the kids is vitally important! Here are my top five tips.
1. Museums
In our city we have many places to visit. In particular we have the National Museum of Wales and the girls are now olde enough to walk around and enjoy, and hopefully learn something from a visit there. Whether it be learning about the dinosaurs or taking in some of the artwork!
2. Watching their favourite films
As I have mentioned the weather is very unpredictable in the UK. The girls have iPads which we allow them to use for content that we are happy with now and again. They both love films and it’s so easy to download the latest films from Warner Bros so they can watch them all summer long. They have some fab titles including The Lego Movie, The Nut Job, Scooby Doo, Dolphin 2 and Max. These will certainly fill those gaps where they can’t play outside and let’s be fair that’s often in the UK.
3. Going for a picnic
The girls love nothing more than having a picnic and a great way to do this is to tie it into a visit to our local park. They get to use all the swings and slides, feed the ducks, have a picnic and finish the day off with an ice-cream. Sounds like a perfect day!
4. Farm visit
We are very lucky that there a number of community farms in our area and the girls love visiting them for the day to feed the animals and also for the donkey rides!
5. The Beach
One of the girls favourite things to do on a hot summer’s day is a visit to the beach to build sandcastles and dip their toes in the water. They always have a fantastic time and actually I quite enjoy it to!
During the six weeks of summer holidays it’s always difficult to fill the time and keep the kids entertained, but if you just look around a little you can find loads of fun activities.
