Call In The Pro’s Or Go It Alone?
DIY is a wonderfully, awful thing. Most of us have tried our hand at it and we will all have our own horror stories. The simple rule of DIY is knowing when it’s worth taking on the job yourself and when it’s going to be better to call in the professionals. So, let’s have a little look at when you should admit defeat and when you should stand your ground with a triumphant success.
There are lots of simple jobs you can take on around the house without spending much money and listen up ladies, this means you too. Certain DIY efforts are really quite easy if you use your common sense. You can also find a video guide for just about every single thing on earth if you search YouTube or Google. So whether you are handy with a hammer, or like Frank Spencer with a paint brush, don’t walk away from the little jobs.
A squeaky gate or door is a really quick fix. You just need to get to the root cause of the noise. It’s more than likely to be a hinge so start out with the basics. A little WD-40 can repair just about anything. So get lubricating and see if that fixes the problem. You may find that the door hasn’t been hung quite right. This is something worth calling the professionals in for. Sticky locks can also be cured with a little lubrication. So before you start ringing a locksmith, see if you can loosen it up or clean it out. It’s better not to start unscrewing things though if you still find you have an issue. Your home security is one area you need to be sure of, so get the pros out to make you safe.
Electrical items are a bit of a no go area. Ok so changing a fuse is something we should all be capable of and replacing a lightbulb isn’t going to cause you too much drama, at least it shouldn’t! However if you are having issues with your electrical switchboard then you need to call in a qualified electrician. Same goes for gas. It isn’t worth gambling with your life or the life of your family to save a few extra pennies.
Working up ladders throws up all kinds of potential for injury but you really just need to be a little bit sensible here. A step ladder needs to be on a perfectly flat surface and if you are working outside then make sure there is another adult around. It is best to have someone securing the bottom whilst you are running up and down. It may not seem very manly but then neither is lying in a crumpled heap on the floor. For any really tricky jobs, on your roof for example, it might be worth calling someone in and letting them take it on.
Use your common sense at all times and don’t forget that tools are pretty dangerous beasts, especially circular saws. You can give yourself a pretty horrendous injury if you aren’t paying attention. Be aware, respect the dangers and know when you are out of your depth.
