Earliest childhood memories

It’s strange that the older you get how memories become vague so I was thinking what are my earliest memories. I can remember being at my grandparents house and I would be about four years old and I would sit on my grandfathers lap and have a sleep. My grandmother would always say, “Don’t let him sleep, his mother will go mad!” I always did though!

I remember getting a scaletrix for Christmas and by lunchtime me and my brother had burned the motors out by using it too much!

I have three older children from a previous marriage and asked them all what was the earliest memories of childhood they had and I found the answers quite fascinating and funny at times. 

My oldest daughter J is 20 years old and some of her earliest memories are:

She said she always remembers coming downstairs and seeing Santa’s footprints and one year she was really happy to see the bike she’d asked for, she was amazed because they were in the living room! On her birthday she remembers having a bouncy castle which was fun at the time because she was about three to four years old. 

My 18 year old daughter remembers having a birthday party at Safeways supermarket, with a Tweenies cake. She was four years old.

My sixteen year old son remembers driving to a local beauty spot with November rain by Gun’n’Roses playing very loudly in the car. He was four years old.

My eldest daughter remembers me getting their presents out of the attic on Christmas eve when they were six and four years of age and me saying that I was getting the washing down and then J telling E Santa’s not real.

They have similar memories of times when they were aged six, five and four years of age. 

All of us going to a local beauty spot and me carving their names in trees. Going to a local shop to buy a beanie toy every Saturday for months which cost me a fortune!

Going to our local park throughout the summer, going swimming and me standing next to the heater because the water was freezing! They all remember having toast afterwards. 

They would have a cup of tea in the morning and all the cups had to be level otherwise they would kick off and I had to bring the kettle in to measure exactly that they were all the same. 

My oldest used to do horse riding when she was about six years old and the other two always came with me. It was up a country lane and a car got stuck in the mud and it had been raining heavily so I got out to help push them out. Unfortunately I didn’t really think it out and was covered head to toe in mud. 

It’s amazing what you remember from childhood and when I asked them they only remembered nice things.

Which finally brings me onto my three year old twins and I’m fascinated to know what their earliest memories will be. I would like to think it will be Christmas and the excitement of presents that Santa has left along with his footprints.

All the lovely places they have visited before turning four years old. 

Probably the most important I would like all my children to remember is how much I love them all and whatever they need I will always be there for them.
