Easy Kitchen Makeover

The kitchen is often considered as the heart of the home, especially in family homes. It’s full of the lovely smells of cooking and baking. It’s where the food is and, more importantly, it’s where the kettle is. Get it can often be the room in the house we neglect the most. Re-decorating the kitchen can seem like an expensive venture, or inconvenient – how are you going to cook while the oven is standing in the middle of the dining room?

But it doesn’t have to be an impossible task. Here are some ideas for decorating your kitchen with minimal effort.

1. Get Fitted

The simple, if not the most cost-effective, is to pay for someone to fit your kitchen. You can have this done through a chain like IKEA, or hire a decorator to piece it together for you. The benefit of this is the fact you can relocate the kettle and just make rounds of tea, no strain for you. The disadvantage is the cost. Although hiring someone to fit a whole new kitchen for you isn’t the most expensive thing, it’s still outside most people’s budgets.

Another important thing to consider is where do you need your power outlets? If you have an electric kitchen appliance, then you want to put it in the perfect place where it doesn’t look clumsy. For example, rice cooker, especially Japanese ones, usually require small space so it can easily fit in a corner.

2. Lick of Paint

The second way to completely re-haul your kitchen is to paint it – and not just the walls. Take down the cabinet doors, sand them down and paint them. Chalk paint rather than a varnish is in fashion at the moment and isn’t too expensive. Painting the doors might sound like a cheat, but the difference of changing the dark wood to pale grey is instantaneous, and you get a new kitchen without buying one.

3. Creative Storage

Think about new ways of using the available space in your kitchen. A spice rack can be built into the cupboard door, or use magnetic spice jars, like the ones from not on the high street, to keep the cabinets free for something else. Built-in drawers under the sink can keep your cleaning products organized and easy to access.

4. Accessories

No room is complete without nick nacks. Whether you are going for a minimal look or love a full worktop, a few new gadgets or decorations will lift any kitchen. Accessorise in a way that will work with how you use your kitchen: the avid baker may get a colourful VonShef stand mixer, the lover of Japan may build a sushi station. Either way, your kitchen needs to be practical and pretty.

5. Floor It

Again you can hire someone to fit a new floor or do it yourself. You can cheat the price and get B&Q’s self-adhesive vinyl tiles. Or you might find that the natural floorboards just need a good buff and staining. If re-flooring the kitchen is not an option, then think about an area rug – maybe not a shag-pile when you will be spilling something at some point, but a coarser fabric may revitalise the area nicely.
